12.1 crashes on startup on Apple Silicon (M1) / Big Sur

12.1 crashes on startup on Apple Silicon (M1) / Big Sur

Hello,

I was just about to install the latest stable OpenTTD on my MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020, 16Gb RAM, MacOS 11.6 Big Sur) and it crashes on startup, before even showing its window. To narrow the problem, I tried installing previous versions as well, with the following results:
  • OpenTTD 12.1 - crashes
  • OpenTTD 12.0 - crashes
  • OpenTTD Nightly (20211128-master-g802ca4e722) - crashes
  • OpenTTD 1.11.2 - works fine
It seems like the reason for crashing was introduced with version 12 somewhere. I got crash reports for both 12.0 and 12.1. I attached 2 crash reports for 12.1 because they seem to be different.
I also tried to run 12.1 on my wife's MacBook Air (M1, 2020, MacOS 12.0.1 Monterey) to see if the problem is machine or M1-specific, and the game runs on her Mac alright. No crashes at all, starts up as usual, asks for OpenGFX download etc.

Is it maybe the OS difference? My Mac has Big Sur, hers has Monterrey.

Or maybe I have some leftover files from some older version somewhere which my installation is picking up and my wife's vanilla is not? I tried looking in /Library/Application Support and ~/Library/Application Support, couldn't find anything there, is there any other place I could look?

The crash log seems to point to the touch bar icons support causing trouble, in specific it's the part fetching the graphics for the icons that fails.

Updated to Monterey (12.0.1). Problem's still on. We can rule out Big Sur. The touchbar theory is a good candidate as my wife's MacBook Air doesn't have one and it runs the game alright.
Moving this bug over to github.
