Game doesn't start in MacOSX

Post by mactrak »

I downloaded openttd-0.3.2.1-osx.dmg. When I launched the game, it immediatley quit and the crash-log returned the following message:

Last login: Sat Jun 19 16:56:16 on ttyp1
cat /library/logs/console/$user/console.log; exit
Welcome to Darwin!
[c213-100-239-235:~] per% cat /library/logs/console/$user/console.log; exit
cat: /library/logs/console/per/console.log: No such file or directory
logout
[Process completed]

What's wrong? Why can't I start the game?

it's not a crash since the internal error handling is still active. The most likely error is that you didn't copy the WIN ttd files in the data folder. See the readme for more info on that one.

You can always open console in applications/utilities to see the error output

The real issue I see in this is why you got a "file not found"
I will look into this

I put the 5 graphic files in the data folder, just like it says in the readme file.

I'm not sure, but the message I quoted in my first post might have been from the console.

I read the the readme file again and tried something different. First time I double-clicked the "Open Transport Tycoon" icon. This time I used a console window and launched the file "ttd" from there. In the console window already open it said:

Error: Cannot open file 'data/sample.cat'
ttd.c:69: failed assertion `0'
./ttd: line 1: 450 Abort trap "open transport
tycoon.app"/contents/macos/ttd $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6 $7 $8

and a new window (console I guess) opened. The head said

"cat /library/logs/console/$user/console.log; exit"

and the total message read:

Last login: Sun Jun 20 10:57:35 on ttyp1
cat /library/logs/console/$user/console.log; exit
Welcome to Darwin!
[c213-100-239-235:~] per% cat /library/logs/console/$user/console.log; exit
cat: /library/logs/console/per/console.log: No such file or directory
logout
[Process completed]

It seems the app is looking for a file with the path: /library/logs/console/$user/console.log
and I don't have it: /library/logs/console doesn't exist.

guess what? You should also use sample.cat from win TTD, like it says in the readme
I even made that line in red for faster reading of the problem

I put the sample.cat in the data folder, and this time it says

Error: Cannot open file 'data/trg1r.grf'
ttd.c:69: failed assertion `0'
./ttd: line 1: 421 Abort trap "open transport tycoon.app"/contents/macos/ttd $1 $2 $3 $4 $5 $6 $7 $8

and the other window repeats the part about /library/logs/console/... .

Maybe something is wrong with my graphic files. I use VirtualPC and have only been able to get TTD for DOS to run, never the Windows version, so I don't know wether the graphic files are OK.

And also there was no part in red in any of the readme files. Are there different versions around?

you need all the files mentioned in the readme in the data folder

That's a VPC issue, not TTD. Remember that VPC is made for working with productive apps and not games, so any game that works is a bonus

no, not the readme, the error output. Now that you say that, I checked when I added the coloured error output, and it was after 0.3.2.1 was released

copied from readme.txt
List of the required files:
sample.cat
trg1r.grf
trgcr.grf
trghr.grf
trgir.grf
trgtr.grf

add those files to the data folder
