on my laptop-screen CONSTANTLY SCROLLS to the full left position.

Post by rongant »

I have tried every setting I could find, but nothing makes a difference. when I start a game - the whole screen pans ALL THE WAY to the left side and I can't really play the game at all. any help would be appreciated.

Let me guess: new laptop with Win10 pre-installed? No, I don't need a crystal ball for that, just some memory. ;)
That does look like a bug, but it's definitely not OpenTTD's fault, but Microsoft's. I remember this issue being mentioned here already (here is one thread about that). Basically you have to open the properties of openttd.exe, switch to the compatibility tab, and turn off some nonsense. In the thread linked above, Eddi mentioned display scaling. I've also read elsewhere (for example here) that mouse gestures have caused some trouble, but I'd guess they can only be disabled system-wide (Disclaimer: I do not use Win8, Win8.1 or Win10 and I have no plans to change this, so I don't have any experience myself).
While I'm collecting common Windows issues with OpenTTD here: Win7 (or was it Vista already?) introduced desktop backgrounds changing by fading over from one picture to another, which is known to cause all sorts distorted colors. I've seen reports of this particular issue for many old games like 1602 A.D. or Age of Empires (which happens to be a Microsoft game - go figure). It seems to be related to 8-bit graphics; OpenTTD has a 32-bit mode though, which should be immune to that issue when it's in use.

Windows seems to be getting less and less usable ... I may dump it entirely at some point and only use some Linux distro instead. At least some of them retain support for mouse & keyboard instead of throwing that out of the window (pun intended) in favor of touch interfaces, which are unusable without touchscreens. No thanks, I keep my good old screens from '04 and '05 until they break, and I have enough PS/2 keyboards to last another 30 years or more at my keyboard consumption rate (<1 keyboard per 10 years).

I used to have this problem on my old laptop, an ancient Acer Aspire with a staggeringly brilliant celeron. When I alt-tabbed and resumed the game, it would occasionally scroll infinitely to the left or right corner. It was resolved by compatibility modes, that was a Windows Vista system. I don't remember specifics, but I just farted around with compatiblity tick boxes and eventually resolved it.
It also infrequently left the aero theme in a very distorted state, even after the game had exited, missing or odd colours which I never fully resolved, it was as if it was trying to render the aero with a GIF image style limited palette.

hey I tried every available compatibility mode- the list only went as far back as Vista/server 2008. no change though-soon as I open a new or saved game-screen scrolls full to the left. I can right click back to move the screen to the right- but as soon as I stop moving it to the right, it automatically returns to full left . I've tried updating the touch pad drivers, no change. I've tried using a separate USB mouse - no change. tried Uninstalling and reinstalling the game-no change.

super frustrating I tell ya.

I wanted to use this laptop to connect to my big screen TV and play on that but I can't even get the game to work :(

I used to have the same problem...for me, simple restart of the laptop worked.

I also tried rebooting - no change unfortunately.

Your [left-arrow] key might be stuck.
Open notepad and type in some text, then use the mouse to move the cursor somewhere in the middle of the text. if the cursor moves back to the left, try cleaning the keyboard with compressed air.
