Graphics for checkpoints needed

Post by dominik81 »

Currently OTTD is using the graphics on the first picture for checkpoint. The second picture shows another possibility how checkpoints could look like. But both don't really make sense. Why should checkpoints have platforms and even a building?

Therefore we need new graphics for checkpoints. If someone comes up with good graphics for checkpoints we will include them in the next release.

Can't you make a normal railway track with a sign or something?

You don't need a building do you?

I suppose something like a sign would work as well. But I'm not a graphics artist, I'm a coder.

Do you have a photo of a specific sign you would like to use?

I can draw a sign I think, shouldn't be very difficult.

Just use signal box graphics
You can find them in http://www.patagonia.de.vu/ttd/

The signal boxes are also buildings. The idea of a checkpoint is that it's an invisible place used to send trains to. Since there are gameplay problems with invisible checkpoints, we need to find out what to place there. A sign would be useful, but I don't know how it should look. That is the job for the artist to find out

Do we really need a sign?

The checkpoint has a name-sign above it. So it's recognisable. The only thing you need to do is to click on the name. So you don't need any sign, you can use a normal railway-track-sprite, can't you?

we need something because it should be visible even when the signs are disabled

Why? You can choose to disable the signs and then you see nothing, no checkpoint. Isn't that what we want? When we want to see the checkpoint we just enable the signs again.

Think again, and you will discover that you can't clearly see to what tile signs belong...

No, indeed, that's why I said that it must be possible to click on the name.

it's easier to code if it's just a new tile than coding the sign click support. Besides, how shoud TTD know, if you plan to click on the sign of the tile behind it

There's no point in this discussion. If somebody is interested in drawing graphics for checkpoints, please either contact me, come to the IRC channel or post them here or on SourceForge. We would be very glad, to have nice new checkpoint graphics.. :D

Isn't it an idea to use some kind of (square) arch maybe? Just a steel construction, that's not a building and it would be obvious it's a waypoint I think...

Very nice idea. That sounds good. And than it would be possible to have it in company colors as well. I like the idea, can you do it?

I think using signal towers for the checkpoints makes perfect sense. That's what MB's graphics are. I think they're a little big, but you could make smaller ones easily enough. There has to be Something visible so you know where it is, and it's realistic too.

I agree. Something needs to be there, and signal boxes have no other purpose in the game, so why not use them for that?

I would do it, only thing is I can't do any graphics  So you'd have to ask someone else to shape the idea further.
I got the idea from the highways ;)

I thought OpenTTD was going to support GRF files. So you could use MB's released GRF file just as it is.

I suggest using something like these. Not these themselfe, they are MB's, but something like them.
They fit.
