TT music recorded from ESS AudioDrive

Post by jfs »

This is a bit of an experiment.
I guess many of the old TT players used to play TT on a computer without a wavetable MIDI synthseizer, but now most (all?) use some kind of wavetable synthseizer for the MIDI music, or maybe isn't even listening to it at all. Well, after reviving an old computer, and finding the proper cable, I decided to try recording the sound of TT as it sounded on a normal soundcard in 1995 ;)

This is the result.
All the files are recorded from an ESS AudioDrive 1668 ISA card, connected via speaker out to the line in of an onboard Realtek AC97 audio codec (nForce2), and then encoded to 128 kbps MP3 mono. (The music seemed to be in mono already, so no need to waste space on two channels. The sound quality is equivalent to a 256 kbps stereo MP3.)

I have moved all the download links to a separate page:
http://users.tt-forums.net/jfs/
All TTO and TTD music has now been recorded, encoded and uploaded. I will try to do a few tracks from other games soon.
I'll update that page and post in this thread when I add something new.

I'd like to hear your comments on this project :)

Brings back memories. :) I had an ESS AudioDrive 1688, not so dissimilar to your card, and the music sounds identical to what it did back then. Happy days...

Please do continue with other songs! Oh, the WW music would be nice too. ;)

Well John Broomhall did. He made all the music for the Transport Tycoon games.

Here's the three next songs:
*edit* links removed, check first post

Thanks to Owen Rudge for lending me the webspace!
I'll return with more music soon, also from other old games 8)

Just to make it all more convenient for me, I've made a quick webpage for the project:
http://users.tt-forums.net/jfs/
I'll try to keep that one updated, as well as this thread, but keeping all the download links on the page.

I've re-encoded and re-uploaded all the tracks, in an attempt at squeezing the very last bit of quality out of the files. You probably don't be able to hear the difference though ;)

I will most likely be doing the rest of the tracks after getting some sleep.

Thanks! I just to have an ESS, but was always bothered with problems. I'm not even going to start about my SB AWE32. This sounds a lot better then these flat midi's on a AC97 compatible...

I heard there's a plugin/patch for TTD that lets you play mp3s with it? It could be encorporated with this to provide the sounds for the game as intended...

Yes, I wrote a replacement DXMCI.DLL that can do that. I'll likely release a batch file soon that puts all the files in the right place (TT's order of music files is different to the way they are actually stored).

You don't have to register it - you can use it without registering, it's just you'll get "please register" windows every now and then. Anyway, it's not very expensive, it cost me about £12-13 to register (and it's not often that I register software, to be honest).

Found something interesting. Those who visited the AGMTT newsgroup several years ago (and might sitll be doing, I'm not...) might remember that a guy called Rich Nagel posted some HQ versions of a few TT tracks. I uploaded those as well now, just look a bit down the page. I can especially recommend the TTO theme :)
