Transfer only one type of goods from multi-carriage train?

Post by PeeJay »

I have a map with several cities on the coastline but a very steep gradient up to the main plateau of land.

One of these cities has a bank that is pretty much inaccessible by train, but I have combated this by building a train station at the top of the hill and transferring valuables by road from the bank to the train station.

I can now take valuables away from the city but not bring them in, since the train station is too far away from the bank to accept valuables. The trains I have going between my cities also carry passengers and mail.

Is there any way I can make these trains transfer only the valuables and unload passengers and mail as normal?

only if you take a nightly version instead of the stable version. that version has Cargodist, which will take care of transfers automatically. you can enable it only for valuables, if you want to keep on playing with your regular passenger lines, or for all cargos, but that will likely congest your network hopelessly.

Another trick would be to have a train that does valuables/passengers/mail "transfer all" at the station, but have *another* train visit the station which has no armoured cars. It will pick up the transferred passengers and mail and deliver them onwards (provided it isn't full when it arrives! You may need it to do an "unload and leave empty" at another nearyby station.)

But you have another problem.

If your trucks are "transferring" valuables at the railway station, they won't *take* valuables transferred from a train. If you allow them to "transfer and take cargo" they will take the train's valuables BUT they will also pick up and take their own original cargo back to the bank. I don't know if you get credit for this but "realism" would suggest that you shouldn't!

Here's a trick that folk don't necessarily spot however.

Build a "truck" station near the bank, but as far from the bank as you can in the direction of where you can put your railway station, i.e. hover the "build truck station" around until it *just* has "supplies valuables" showing. NOW build a new railway station as close as you *can* to the truck station, and when you plant the railway station, do a "Ctrl-Click". Instead of the station just appearing, TTD will pop up a box saying what other station do you want to link it to? If your new truck station shows on the list, click it.

You now have a railway station which is linked to the truck station and so BOTH will supply/accept the same combination of goods, which combination will be all that either covers on the map.

This trick is also fab for building a new passenger carrying railway station at the edge of a town - link the new station to an existing bus stop instead of making it a new station - in a half-way decent town the bus stop will already be generating passengers in the hundreds so your railway station is off to a flying start.
