Train derails and proceeds to catch fire in Manchester

Seems a Class 47 decided to set itself on fire.

An empty chartered passenger train has derailed and caught fire in Salford.

Four fire crews were called to the incident near Regent Road at around 14:30 GMT after the rear diesel locomotive of the West Coast Railways train caught fire.

A British Transport Police spokesman said the driver of the train was "safe and well".

All train services are suspended between Manchester Piccadilly and both Preston and Newton-Le-Willows.

A spokesman for Network Rail said routes were "severely impacted" and it would be "some time" before normal services resumed.

The train, which was made up of two class 47 diesel locomotives and five coaches, had been travelling from Ardwick in Manchester to Carnforth in Lancashire.

It's derailed very close to Ordsall Lane Junction, is it possible there was a points failure of some sort as the trailing loco was going over?

Rare for a rear carriage to jump the track for no reason, surely. Suppose we will have to wait and see - must admit that what you say sounds about right.

Yes, it was the trailing loco that jumped the track. WCRC have a thing about top and tailing most of there trains from what I've seen.

Seems so. Though the fire looks to be coming from under the loco rather than inside.
