Problem with placing signals

Hi, i'm new to OpenTTD and when i try to place signals there just pops up an error message saying "can't convert signals here... ...there are no signals."
Of course there are no signals, I was trying to place some..
I'm getting really frustrated because of this so if anyone knows what's wrong please let me know!

Check out the wiki (http://wiki.openttd.org/Signals#Signal_Interface)... it explains it better than I could.

My guess is you've selected the "wrong" signal button...

Welcome to the forums.

Do read the wiki page(s) as suggested when you have some time ... you will find lots of useful information.

To solve your specific problem you need to un-click the convert signal button (the one in the top right corner) before trying to build signals.
You can use the convert button afterwards to change an existing semaphore to its corresponding light signal version or the other way round. As there are no signals present that you are trying to convert the error message is correct.
