NRM to set up in Loughborough?

Post by Bad Hair Day »

Humour me if the case is otherwise, but I have heard that the NRM is considering purchasing the currently available land that was once the the Loughborough Central goods yard. The warehouses and other buildings on the site have all been demolished except for the original GC goods shed and the plan by property developers to build flats on the sat has apparently fallen through.

What the NRM might use the site for (which, while a decent size, isn't exactly huge) I'm not certain of, although with the possibility in the future of access to eighteen or so miles or heritage railway, plus a Network Rail connection (both requiring the completion of the Bridging the Gap project however) leaves some room for the imagination.

Is any truth in what I've heard, or is it just the idle fancy of anoraks who'd like to see a National Collection outpost in the Midlands?

Believe it when you see it. That's what I do whenever I hear enthusiasts talking about future plans, because 99.9% of heritage rail plans are never realized.

Usually because 99.9% of heritage rail plans are hideously unrealistic.

Like running a commuter steam service. Especially between two points that noone particularly wants to go to. That's the one that keeps getting banged around A LOT...

It would probably be a good idea, seeing as both exsiting NRM sites are a long way Up North. having a more southerly outpost might help extand the reach of the collection.
