Tyne and Wear Metro rolling stock refurbishment

Post by beeb375 »

The first Metro train to be refurbished by Wabtec in Doncaster has arrived back in Newcastle. It is expected to enter service in the next month or so, and features both a new external livery and interior. The rest of the fleet (90 2-car units in all) will be refurbished over the next four years, with the work consisting of a complete strip down of the train, repairing corroded sections of the body, and a complete overhaul of the interior, including the driver's cab.

The new livery can be seen below. Personally I think the grey looks very smart, but the black paint on the front doesn't work well.

For those of you who don't know, here's a photo (taken at my local station, in fact) of a train with the most popular current livery, red with yellow doors and ends. The trains also come in blue and green variations of this livery, and there's also a few advertising liveries floating about, as well as the original livery featured on the first Metrocar (4001).

I expected a lot more cosmetic change on the exterior, but this still looks pretty good. :D

You're so lucky up there to have such a great system, on top of an ok bus operator, and a competent ITA.

So jealous!

That new colour scheme looks pretty good, what's the new interior like?

The silver reminds me a bit of the Merseyrail 507/508 refurbishment- I was living in Ormskirk at the time and many people (mainly those who weren't transportation geeks) thought the refurbished sets were new trains.

Oh yeah, knew I'd seen that colour combination somewhere before... Not sure what the interiors look like yet, will let you know if I find any pics, or when I eventually get to ride on the new one!
