flat canal/land harbours?

Post by juval »

Hi been playning around A LOT with the canal system much lately and had som nice cities with canals runnint through it like Venice, Italy. But i really do miss a dock that you can place on flat land, i.e without having to raise the land to get the slope to place a harbour. It takes up A LOT of space and it would be so much easier to use.

so is there anything like this or is it to difficult to implement?

One word: newports.

Explanation; once newgrf airports are complete, the plan is (I believe) to extend the ability to define new vehicle stations with custom graphics and statemachines to ships and road vehicles.

When that will happen: who knows? I'm hoping to give it a bit of a kick-along soon. :)

Also, awaiting removal to the proper forum. :)

Eventually it would be nice to have docks either adjacent to the canal/river/ocean, or built 'over' them (like a railway station) to allow more flexible port layouts. As Pikka says, has to wait for a new development, but hey I remember when the consensus was trams were impossible...and now look.

:)

On a similar vein, question for you Pikka (or anyone else more code-wise than I am); Will it eventually be possible to code in avoidance for ships and aircraft a la road vehicles and trains? I don't think having accidents involving them hitting (like trains) would really be beneficial, but if they could at least attempt to path around each other like road vehicles do, it would be a great improvement I think. Now, as I've learned with many things (O)TTD related, what sounds easy is often difficult to implement. Is this one of those things? Would it also be a headache on the ship and aircraft path finder?

With the newports it would be possible to prevent infinite ships loading at a dock; they'd be in a statemachine like an airport where you could limit where and when they could go. I don't think preventing them from driving through each other on the open sea is on the cards though.
