Newbie stuck on installation

Hi guys, I apologise if this is somewhere else on the forums/wiki/umpteen other OTTD sites. I have searched for ages and can't find the answer so though I'd post it up here.

Anyway the general situation is that I've had to end up doing a manual installation of OpenTTD and am now stuck on the 'unzip the Opensfx/gfx/mfx file' part of the process. I have downloaded all the files into the right directories but have no idea whatsoever how to unzip a .tar.gz file. I have tried to download a gunzip program to unzip them but no joy there either.

Does anyone have any info or tips on where I might be going wrong? I just want to play Transport Tycoon again...

If you downloaded the .tar.gz files you have downloaded the sources (the version you have to compile before it becomes useful). You should have downloaded the zip file (Binary file for all platforms).
