Rondje the Benevolent

Post by Willem »

Many have called it Evil. Many have named it the destroyer of fair OTTD games and the ruin of honest AI battles. And even those who have not yet spoken out have silently cursed its existence...

Rondje the Parasite-AI.

And yet there is another side to Rondje. One I am reluctant to reveal, lest it's carefully built image of evil is damaged beyond repair and it will no longer strike fear in the hearts of the brave. But reveal it I will: Rondje can be your greatest ally if you let it...

Rondje the Benevolent. :D

Ok, maybe that's a bit over the top. But there definitely is utility to be found in Rondje. What we (and we being the developers of Rondje and a couple of friends) like to do when playing OTTD is build train networks. Big train networks so we can grow big cities. Dunno why, but that's just fun. Especially after 17 beers and at 3 in the morning during one of out good old-fashioned LANs.

Now, in order to grow your cities it always helps to add bus services to the nearby towns. Connecting all these towns with trains takes up too much space that could also be used by your expanding city. The only problem is that none of us really likes buses, since trains are much cooler.

Enter Rondje. While we normally don't want any interference from AI's, Rondje is started when we feel it's time to start adding those pesky little buses. All you have to do then is build stations in the towns you want to have serviced and connect them with roads. Rondje will find the road and start its own bus service. You'll have traffic in your city, but you won't have to deal with all the menial tasks which go with bus services. Leaving you with your hands free to continue constructing your 8-track dual layer mainline crossings  .

And it won't build much in the way of roads, leaving enough room for your own schemes and the cities. Oh, and your trains run straight through Rondje's buses, with the triple advantage of 1) being fun to watch 2) teaching (virtual) people to take the train instead of the bus and 3) not ruining your carefully crafted train schedules.

So there you have it: some good can be found even in the darkest reaches of AI phase-space.

That, or using Rondje in this way will imprint into your brain the inescapable desire to send all of your money to us. But hey, that's a risk worth taking, isn't it? 8)

Have fun,

Willem
