Mountain Routes of the Alps
Having watched a few cab rides from various mountain trains in the Alps (Montenvers railway, Gornergrat railway, Lauterbrunnen - Murren railway etc) I was wondering if anyone else here had any experiences of these or any other mountain railway in the Alps?
Re: Mountain Routes of the Alps
I've done the Lauterbrunnen - Murren route when it was still a funicular between Lauterbrunnen and Grutschalp, I believe it is now (or in the process of being made into) a cable car.
Re: Mountain Routes of the Alps
Been lucky enough to have gone on many railways in Switzerland. The route Zurich - Interlaken, route up to Engleberg, Vevey to Roche du Naye, up to Davos, and many trains where you drive on and it takes you through a tunnel. Others but I forget the names. Great rack railway through Lausanne!
Switzerland is basically a huge trainset

That's no more the case: the final part of this line climbing a 25% (per cent, not per mil!) grade in the woods will be closed and replaced by a 4 km long tunnel the 7th december 2010 (last day of operation).teccuk wrote:...route up to Engelberg...

The Schafbergbahn in Austria going from St. Wolfgang up to the Schafberg is great.
Features a tunnel, steam engines, and a great view on three lakes. Looks like that: click me.

St. Moritz-Tirano on a sunny day in december is unbeatable. Amazingly beatiful. And the Rhatische Bahn trains are quite awesome too.

I have sat in the cab on the Golden Pass line, in a train such as

Gruzie swiss people.
Some advice needed. Nice 4 day break in Zurich this weekend coming, kind friend leant me his flat.
Is the nearest proper mountain / mountain railway / cute chalet town to Zurich Engleburg? Or do you have any other suggestions?
I don't want it to take all day to get there!
Merci!
