Understanding OTTD 32-bit install

Post by martin1986at »

Ok i am new to the forums and would appreciate some assistance regarding OTTD.

First of all congratulations to the team involved in the 32-bit Graphics development! i can honestly say i am in awe at your efforts to bring this game in to the 21st century.

I am having a spot of bother with the installation of the 32bit graphics.
I followed the wiki instructions like a hawk to its prey but if the hawks ability of catching prey is on par with my Computing literacy then i guess the poor analogy hawk would have died of starvation by now.

Ok so i have my game files, openGFX and openSFX already set up, then i was instructed to obtain the graphics.
Now i have a long list of PNG file type sprites and no instructions where to put them, eg in the data folder etc..
My confusion lies with the mentioned tar files. What are they? i assumed the graphics rar i downloaded would be them but they are .png format.
For now my graphics files sit in the data folder of the game and ottd will not run these files in game.

So what is my next step in this process?

Thank you in advance for your support :D

I had the same problem. If you downloaded the "full set" you would have a rar file with a lot of .tar files in there. If you place all the .tar files in the /data folder and start a game you will see all the new sparkling and of the hook graphics.

Hey thanks for your post,

I looked in all the files from the 'full' download and not one tar file exists, just a long list of .png files which i can view.

Some of the rar folders had .tar in the title but when extracted contained none whatsoever.

This seems rather bizzare to me but these png files must surely be read by the game at some point, so do i rename them from png to tar?

Please advise

Thanks

Winrar and most other such application will recognize .tar files as a file that it can extract, and will have the winrar icon. You don't have to unrar those files.

o and use the most recent winrar or 7zip versions. For winrar it's 3.92.

I've gone to the wiki, and download links point to the forums, I follow the links in the forums and it points to the wiki.

I'M LOST!

Could somebody kindly point me directly to the file(s) that I need to download? Pretty please?

What I don't understand is how I can enable or disable a .tar file. For some weird reason my signals are still 8-bit, even though the "Infrastructure-Misc-Signals" .tar file is in my Data folder, just as per instructions. (I installed the fullpack, and everything else is working great!) This question also applies if I want to download some other .tar files from [this list. What if there is a conflict? (Two types of road for example)

Tars are dumb entities, basically just simple collections of .png's organised into a directory structure. They are tars only because that makes them easier to distribute. Theoretically you can extract the tar into your data directory and the graphics will still work, even though there are some complicating niggles.

I know very little about how the game actually handles tars and whether I'm correct in what I'm about to say, but since I want to help I'll have a go at explaining it anyway.

All the tars in your data directory are read in a *.tar manner when the game starts. There is no intelligent functionality for individually loading tars, or controlling dupes (conflicts). I'd hazard a guess the game loads whichever xxxx.png it gets to first, and if there are others, ignores the rest.

As far as the broken signal set, I've no clue what the environment around it is like and I'm too tired to check it out at the moment, but off the top of my head I'd guess it's incompatible with your base set. If it's a tar purpose-built for the signal set, and it's from, say, pre-2010, then it probably only works with one base set, most likely the original Windows set.

I have the megapack on my home PC and if I recall correctly, I've also only got the old 8bpp signals.

Thanks for your reply! :) I still didn't manage to make any 32-bit signals work, but I guess I can survive without. ;) Everything else looks fine!
