No Sound Option

Post by Kludge »

I apologize if this has been covered but I did a search and didn't find anything about it.

I'm trying to install sounds using the OpenSFX library but following the directions using both the manual install method and using the online method I have no option for sounds. There is no sound option to pick in the Game Options section and using the Check Online Content option there is no sound listed.

Here is the Game Options menu:

Here is the lack of sound option for the online content menu:

Thanks in advance for any help.

OpenSFX does not work in 0.7.x, only in recent nightlies and the 1.0.0 betas.

Ah. Thank you. It says clearly that it only works with version 0.8.0 and above but I was in information overload. I figured if I downloaded latest version then everything would work and I never would download a nightly build as I wouldn't really expect it to work.

Thanks again.

Indeed. Never ever touch a nightly build. They are made on purpose to not work...
Joke aside, nightly builds are the most advanced version of OpenTTD. They DO work. Just give them a chance ;)
If you are not ready to work a bit for your ideas, it means they don't count much for you.
OpenTTD and Realism? Well... Here are a few thoughs on the matter.

The worst thing that usually happens is that you sometimes (seldom) get a broken build, but then it is just maximum 24 hours to next version that usually have the bug fixed if it is so obvious that it make the game unplayable.

Back in the day I thought as you do Kludge. I expect most newer members here do because of the necessary warning that the nightly builds are not 100% guaranteed to work all of the time. I can say from experience that they are extremely stable. In the last 10,000 revisions or so I have only encountered a problem twice. One time the Developers were already aware of the problem by the time I uncovered it and the other time it was fixed within minutes of my reporting it. If you are worried then simply save multiple nightly builds (they are zip files) so that if you do encounter that extremely rare problem you can simply overwrite your OTTD files with the previous version. As Belugas said they are the cutting edge and are well worth the minimal time and effort it takes to download and unzip them.

Adding to what has already been said about nightlies: using nightly builds and getting some problems with them pays out well; bug reporting and feedback is very helpful to test the changes and features that will create the next stable version.

And if you feel that downloading zip files every now and then is time consuming you might want to invest some time into setting up an update tool to automate that task: http://wiki.openttd.org/OpenTTD_Updaters
