Trick for refitting wagons (cars)

Post by ostlandr »

I finally figured this out the other day. When you want to add a specific wagon/car to a train with multiple refitted vehicles, it can be a problem. How do you add (for example) a plastic boxcar without refitting all the other boxcars to plastic? Previously I played around with pulling cars off and on. Then it finally hit me. Buy the cheapest available engine, buy the cars to that train, and refit as needed. Then drag across to the "real" train. Works great, and is a good use for shunters/switch engines. Just leave the engine in the depot until you need to do that again. Give it some orders to silence the pop-up.

You can also set ottd to not warn about trains which are stopped. :)

You could also make a new GRF of a super-cheap engine to use for this, if you wanted. I've done it myself though, and I like to buy a diesel shunter for realism :-)

having to stuff long trains into the tiny depot at 60 kmh for switching cars bugs me. why cant we have realistic shuntyards or whatever..
(I also make trains with multiple sets of dual headed locos symmetrical, as in, every pair has the same numer of wagons in between. that would make it, like real life, an easily splittable train, but you can't do that easily in ottd :()
