The fast speed depends on how much your system can handle, to increase the fast forward screen try watching an empty corner of the map, playing a smaller map size or closing other applications running at the same time.

Disabling AIs, not zooming out, not using 32 bpp graphics, not using animation, not using detail all speeds up OpenTTD. Also some pathfinder settings are more efficient than others, but might also result in unwanted paths to be 'found'.

The newer version will likely be a little slower, because it has new features - but it's also likely that you're playing a game with more trains.

Minimise the whole window and it will speed up a lot more.

Most notable is that the new AI framework is a lot slower then the AI shipped with 0.6 and earlier. Did you already try to disable all AIs or did you just ignore the advice given?

Set "Max number of competitors" to 0 in the difficulty window.

If you read the other comments there is other ways of speeding up the game without disabling the ai, look on the bright side you can play faster alone

Try experimenting with different AIs, as they have a different impact on the speed of OpenTTD. Generally, more advanced AIs will consume more computing power, so don't be surprised if you come to the conclusion that the 'best' AIs slow the game the most. Or you may try setting the '#opcodes before AI is suspended' to a lower value in the Advanced settings window. You may also try setting the 'Construction speed of competitors' to a lower value, they're quite challenging even if they're slower.
