Please Help!Company Value Problems

Hey Guys,

Apologies if this has been talked about before, very very new to OpenTTD. I have Windows Vista, just starting to use OpenTTD. Load a game, no problem. But no matter how many stations,buses,trains etc I buy my company value never goes up! Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

Company value is value of property minus your loan, so you first need to make profit before your company value can rise.

Right ok, thanks for getting back to me so quick. I know it sounds stupid but I remember playing back in the day and the company value number used to go up whilst i started making money. Is it possible for you too help me on a couple of other matters?

First, why cant I buy for example 25% percent of a competitors company although I have the money?

And, when you load the game and select a land, theres a long number for Random Seed, what is this?

I remember back in the day the original you would select one of the four lands then a new box would appear with for example a list of 10 further options for that land. Is this not the case in OpenTTD.

There is a settings window with a lot of settings; depending on which version of OpenTTD you are using, it's either called "configure patches" or "advanced settings". There, look for the option "Enable buying shares from other companies". You have to activate this option to buy shares of other companies.
Be aware that if you change this setting in the main menu, it will only apply to new games you start. If you want to change it for a running game, open the "configure patches"/"advanced settings" menu from the running game (drop down menu of the third button from left).


Also, even if this option is activated, new companies are protected for a certain time before you can buy their shares. If you try it will complain with an error message then.

As you may know, computers are not able to generate true random numbers. The random seed is a number that the random generator is "seeded" with, and depending on that number, he will produce a specific, "pseudo-random" sequence of random numbers that the game uses - for example for generating a map. Now the useful thing is that if you have a randomly generated map that you like very much, you can get the seed during the game (by typing "getseed" into the game console), and enter it into the text box you're asking about. This way, the exact same map will be created again.

Oh and it would be useful to know what version of OpenTTD you are using, because some things are different with different versions of OpenTTD (e.g. the "configure patches" / "advanced settings" options menu I mentioned above). You can find this information in the title bar of the main menu.

I believe what he means is that you would select a climate, and then a window would offer you the choice of a random map or about 10 premade scenarios.


That isn't how things are done in OTTD, if you want to play a scenario, you need to specifically load it by clicking the "play scenario" button (at least in the nightlies). As roujin said, we can help you much more if you say which version you are using.

Regarding the seed, you can mostly ignore it. The only way it is really useful is if you write it down. Then when you start a new map, you can enter the exact same seed to get the exact same map if you want, or you can tell your friend the seed so they can get the exact same map you have. Or you could just save the game right at the start and not worry about the seed.

Also, please do not use things like "Please Help!" in the subject, it is really annoying, and for some people will make them ignore your topic, having the opposite effect to what you want.
