how to save the game

how to save the game
I'm sorry to be asking this but I'm very confused! Every time I try to save the game I get a message saying "Game Load Failed. File not writeable." How do I save games and are they now in some sort of different file? I'm not brilliant on computers but can usually follow guides; i've looked about on the wiki section and can't find anything/anyone with similar problems. I have only recently found openttd and love the updates, but having to lose the game scenarios is so frustrating!
Also, I've installed a couple of new updates, such as new bridges and vehicles. For some reason they are appearing as bright pink, wierd shapes. How can I stop this from happening?
Thanks very much.

Re: how to save the game
1st part I can't help with but I'm sure someone else will.
2nd part is easier. The new .grfs you've downloaded are either for dos when you're using the windows version of the game, or vice versa. Download the one's that match the version of the game you're using and , voila, problem solved, no pink scariness!

Re: how to save the game
1st part.
Its because you are not logged in as the administrator.
Either do that and it will save fine or ...
change the guest-user rights for your computer (allow guest to write) or ...
do a search on how to change your newgrf folder to your my documents map.
(and also adjust the config file)
Then the game will save in your my documents map without problems.
But since you have no writing powers maybe this will not work...
EDIT:
Although the Administrator solution works, it is a bad idea.
If you have no writing priviliges to the folder from where you run OpenTTD,
you should cut and paste your openttd.cfg file to a folder where you do have those priveliges. (eg. for windows my documents)
Everything is explained in the readme file that came with your dowload.
ps:
It is always a good idea to read documentation on any program before you start it...
I plead guilty because i ran in to the same problem before.

Re: how to save the game
Normally, OpenTTD saves in a sub directory of the user's folder. So, you don't need to be administrator. Maybe his disk is full?ChillCore wrote:1st part.

And it's generally a bad idea to log in as administrator unless you just want to install software system-wide or you want to change system settings, install drivers etc. Otherwise, you make it very easy for malware to infect not only a single account but the whole system (well I assume there are enough unfixed privilege escalation bugs anyway

Re: how to save the game
Hmmmm.... I also need help with this same issue.
I've just created a landscape using the scenario editor and figured I should save it as I go along, but I'm getting the same message "Game load failed. File not writable".
Am I right to assume I save it in Scenario folder? If so, it says I have 48,732mb free.
I'm the only user on my machine and am definitely currently logged in as an administrator. I only re-built the machine about 2 months ago, and don't really save data files to my internal hard drive, so there's loads of space available on it.

I only discovered the patch a few days ago as a result of telling my fella what an awsome game it was all those years ago. I googled it in the hope of finding some screenshots or something to show him, and was totally amazed when I found a patch that would make it work again. I had my original disk easily to hand, complete with manual!! (yes... I think that's scary too! lol), and there I was, playing it within minutes [How cool!! Massive respect to those who've made this possible.
].
It's a bit differnt to how I remember it in terms of scenarios though, so I'm assuming (from what I've read) that the patch is some kind of re-write using the original structure?? But anyhow, I wanted to create a scenario that I used to play years ago, where the diamond mines were on an island in the middle, with the banks in the towns on the larger island that formed a cirle around it. I've kinda got something close enough after a few of hours fiddling, so I'll be gutted if I have to lose it.

Re: how to save the game
IIRC you need at least one town on the map to be able to save it.
Re: how to save the game
Ive got the same problem with my game, it won't save the scenario and says "game load failed, file not writeable"
Now both OTTD says that aswell as Vista (both have boxes appear).
I would show a screenshot but I can't find the folder where they are.
Edit: works now saves in Adminitrator

I'd made a afew towns and industrys so it cant be that.you need at least one town on the map to be able to save it.

Re: how to save the game
Hi all.
Was experiencing the same thing myself. wouldnt save, with 2 error messages.
What I did to fix it was, right clicked openttd.exe and under compatibility, checked the tick box for run this program as administrator.
Now saves.

Re: how to save the game
Thanks very much, this worked a treat. I am glad you said this as I would not have thought of this solution as I am an administrator on the computer. Also just mentioning that I have OTTD on both XP and Vista, I only had this problem on Vista.

Re: how to save the game
Running the game as administrator is NOT a solution. Read section 4.2 of the readme.txt, and if there's an openttd.cfg in the binary directory, delete it.
He's like, some kind of OpenTTD developer.
Re: how to save the game
I already forgot about my post.
Newbies, eh?
I stand corrected and shall adjust my post.
Reading the do_not_readme is the correct solution.
ps:
I must say thank you to PhilSophus because his reply is what got me to dig in the source and brought me where i am today.
