Error With Website

Post by Beardie »

Got a bit of an error here, i use Google Chrome as a web browser and the web borwser still says the website is under maintance, which up and till about ten minutes ago i thought it still was, but then i was using internet explorer 7 (because java is not fully supported on chrome) i came on the website and it was working.

Is it the website or is it my Chrome Browser that is playing up here.

Did you try Ctrl F5 or Shift F5 to reload, forcing chrome to ignore the cached page it has available?

There was a problem last night, but not this morning. Your browser may have cached the redirect - try emptying your cache.

Along the lines of this, what's occurring with this new closure of the site for ten minutes at 2am every night?

Big confusion going on.

I noticed it shutting at 2am for 10 mins - it's been like that for ages. Although at 2am there's other things on my mind :)

Maybe Owen thinks nobody uses the site at 2am. Nobody complains that the London Underground closes at 2am.

You'd be surprised..

Boris wants to keep the tube running 24h for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympics. The staff are now complaining that it's _not_ closing at 2am!

I had the cached redirect in Chrome too, but it was quite easily fixed by navigating to a sub-page from a link or whatever (like direct to the Private Area, muahahaha) and then going back home again - that made Chrome realise its mistake!

Last time I saw that, about 3 weeks ago, it mentioned something like back-up / maintenance
(who would believe that, a caring webmaster  )

10 minutes is too much. It shouldn't be more than 5 or 6 minutes. Nevermind, I check NASA and puppylinux during that time.

It takes as long as the backup takes. If you'd rather I didn't back the site up, then fine, but we may lose quite a lot if the server should die...

Anyway, before I added that message, the forum simply stopped responding for about ten minutes - no pages would load - while the backup took place (as the database tables were locked). Now it gives you a nice little message. Sometimes the backup will take maybe 6-8 minutes, sometimes 12, depending on how busy the server otherwise is. It's a bit of a pain, yes, but it hardly takes a long time, and it's rather important that the backups be made.
