Except perhaps with an extending mechanical boot or boxing glove fitted onto the front of the train.
Seriously though this is something I don't understand. Leaving copper coins on the line maybe, we've all done that when we were young and stupid, but playing chicken with several tens of tonnes of metal?! They must be really really bored, or else suicidal.
Maybe they ran into that computer programmer with a Margaret Thatcher fixation that I mentioned.

Six months?!He was sentenced in Feb 2008 to six months imprisonment for obstruction without intent.

So more morons are the judges.
They should sentence him to 6 months cleaning the platforms of his local station.
Everyday I get more convinced that this world is doomed.

Re: Morons!
He endangered not only his own life but those on the train and his friends, a prison sentance is completely correct in this case.ThorRune wrote:Six months?!He was sentenced in Feb 2008 to six months imprisonment for obstruction without intent.Holy heck! Half a year imprisonment because of THAT? Even with repeated offences, that's just completely off scale! I'd imagine a fee along the lines of £300, maybe, no inprisonment :S And... Without intent? It's clearly WITH intent. This whole thing is just wierd.
I fail to see how keeping one idiot out of circulation for 6 months is a bad thing? I personally would of forced him to write letters to each person on the carriage, the driver AND the company who owned the train, after the sentance, saying sorry. He certainly wont mean it, but loosing 6 months of his life will make him think twice. So more morons are the judges.

This is clearly some local yoof who causes more trouble than simply playing chicken.
I think the prison sentence is a reminder that any future misbehaviour will result in a severe penalty.
Let's just hope it's his life.

Re: Morons!
As if this isn't a severe penalty, Dave? Sereously. Half a year inprisonment 'just to tell him it could be worse later' is mad. And how on earth did he ever risk the lives of the train passangers? Ever noticed what all those tonnes does to a person, and what the person does to all those tonnes..?
He did sure risk hes own life, but there's NOTHING that warrants even a week in prison.

I'm sorry, but who said that the prison sentence was for playing chicken with the train?ThorRune wrote:Six months?!He was sentenced in Feb 2008 to six months imprisonment for obstruction without intent.Holy heck! All it said was the same person got sentenced at the beginning of the year; the actual crime could easily have been placing concrete blocks on the track.
Also, there could quite easily been some severe effects as a result of his actions - the train would have applied its emergency brakes, at best causing massive disruptions to large parts of the rail network at worst causing serious injury to the passengers on board due to the sudden brakes.

Re: Morons!
I don't tend to think prison is always the best solution as it institutionalizes people and gives them a chance to learn from other criminals, but to be fair this guy would probably have ended up being sent to prison as it is unlikely he would be able to afford any fine. In addition he will probably be let out after only two or three months due to the UK parole system that usually lets people out very early due to prison overcrowding.
Re: Morons!
Lets see;ThorRune wrote:And how on earth did he ever risk the lives of the train passangers? Ever noticed what all those tonnes does to a person, and what the person does to all those tonnes..?He did sure risk hes own life, but there's NOTHING that warrants even a week in prison.
* Endangered his life when crossing the track when a train was visible on the tracks approaching the crossing.
* Failed to remove his person from the tracks in a timely and safe fashion and instead placed himself and others in danger by standing on the oncoming trains, tracks.
Now how did he endanger the people on the train? If the train struck him and because of this the train de-railed, at 50mph there will be injuries and possibly even a death. Even if the train didnt de-rail when it struck him, the site of the train hitting him would of caused the driver and those in the front carriage distress and most likely cause the driver to be on leave.
If someone acted this way on the roads, would you still think the same? Would you be happy if some little prat in a hand-glider decided to fly right passed your plane as its just lifting off the runway?
Seriously he got off lightly, he could of been killed and thats not a sentance you can shrug off.

Re: Morons!
Sending people to prison at that age isn't going to do anybody any good.
Granted there should be punishment for going out and trespassing and vandalising, but that on its own will never make the problem go away. We have to ask ourselves why these kids are acting this way, and very often it's because they have no positive role models and nowhere to go and nothing to do in their spare time.
Government likes to give completely inadequate funding to local sports clubs, the cadet organisation, youth centres etc because it's an easy way to make the balance sheet look nicer. Unfortunately it's quite a short-termist attitude because without such comparatively inexpensive facilities being made available to deprived kids we all end up paying more long term in law enforcement, prisons, insurance premiums and repairing the damage when many of them who could have been helped by these organisations to make something of their lives turn to crime instead.

Re: Morons!
I agree Parkey, although I am a little fed up with the kids having nothing to do argument. Kids have more entertainment at their disposal than ever, even deprived kids. Perhaps the police should hand out free footballs on trouble estates so the kids can knock them around.

Are you serious?Washu wrote:Now how did he endanger the people on the train? If the train struck him and because of this the train de-railed,...

BTW:
1. Pushing the brakes is useless, the train would stop many many meters after knocking him or converting him to mince.

2. From the bad quality video provided we cannot be sure when he cleared the rails.
3. If you remember I have already posted that another foul did something similar riding his bike across my speeding car. I wouldn't care a s* if I smashed him to pieces. I would worry more about the pain of his family. And certainly it didn't even pass from my mind to report him to the police and put him into prison. Nevertheless if I was not tired and going to sleep I would have caught him and give him a fair treatment...

Re: Morons!
I've heard reports the train actually clipped his ankle.
And I think 6 months is nowhere near enough for the trauma and distress that the driver would have experienced.
Regardless of your outlook, I bet he missed at least two weeks work.
This act is dangerous and a decent warning needs to be issued.
If he has previous convictions then in my mind the magistrate has no other option but to issue a custodial sentence.
