Depot/Warehouse? [WIP, could use feedback]

Post by Nivlheim »

For the last day and a half I've been occupying myself with drawing a new train depot. However it needs a bit more work, and I could use some feedback. I'm not 100% happy with how it blends in with the TTD environment right now, but I tend to turn perfectionist if I spend too much time on one thing and would really like to hear someone else's view. Do you think the contrast is ok? Colors?

Note: I'm already working on adding detail to the inside wall and more contrast to the darker side (at first glance the pillars and the wall seem to be almost the same shade, which is not intended). Also the back doors might need some more detail.

Temperate shots included.

Edit: I'll use this for something else eventually, thank you all for great feedback.

In my opinion it looks more like a garage than a train depot that doesn't stop it being a nice piece of pixel art.

Honestly, I agree with Ameecher, but I think it would have a place in the Industrial stations or as a road vehicle depot. Just doesn't look "railroady" to me

Nice peace of art. Could the roof be a bit darker? But if it is used as garage it is OK.

As others said, you should use it as road vehicle depot. Looking very nice. :)

What about a narrow gauge rail depot?

It wouldn't be wide enough for that because you need the full width of the tile. With some editting I think it would make a very nice RV depot though.

You took it from my mouth. A bit of editing and you have a nice long (with 2 or 3 of them) tram depot.

Good idea, but NG tracks have their own depot which looks good as well. It'd be pity not to have both in game.

I'd rather he didn't, since then it becomes "generic". I don't use "generic" graphics.

I reckon a set of open doors at the front of the shed would transform that into the train shed you so desire it to be. ;)

I haven't, but I might if I see an interesting one. Still new to TTD graphics, so haven't quite looked into all the projects going on.
Wile E. Coyote wrote:As others said, you should use it as road vehicle depot. Looking very nice. :)
Thanks, now that I'm back home I might just make a RV depot out of this one. Or a tram depot.
Monaro Doorslammer wrote:I reckon a set of open doors at the front of the shed would transform that into the train shed you so desire it to be. ;)
Yeah, I might add open doors to it tomorrow to see for myself. But I kinda agree that it looks more like a road vehicle depot or a warehouse for loading trucks.

I've been away for a while, so I'm viewing this in a new light now (gained some mental distance to the crunch of making it), and I'll probably put it to use as something else than a train depot. Or submit it to OpenGFX if I can't think of anything, although personally I like tailoring my game's looks with smaller, more specialized grfs instead of big collections of various objects. If I have time tomorrow I'll go downtown and see if I can get some station/shed photos for reference, since I still need a train depot for my game and this isn't looking too train-like to me at the moment. Will update the thread when I get something done :)

Tons of great feedback, this is heaven for unorganized minds like my own :D
