So I've been thinking about Drive Through Depots, and a lot of the the discussion I have been able to find about it has been about making depots more like stations. which is probably an ideal solution, but not a very easy one. Since it would require substantial changes to the code. My thought was to do a quick hack that would work something like this: when a train enters a depot, check to see if there is another depot behind it. searching for the other depot wouldn't be too hard, Check the current depot's position to find the tile behind it. Then look for a depot on that tile and check its direction. If there is a depot behind it back to back and owned by the same company, then move the train into the other depot. The result is that trains would pull into one depot, appear to stop, and pull out of the other depot. If I've thought this through correctly you could even create a depot of any length thats a multiple of 2. So it would provide the easier routing that some players want, and the eye-candy that other players want.
Any thoughts?

I like the idea but sadly i don’t think it could work as it would introduce a lot of bug like problems. What i mean by this is like 2 train entering each end of the depot. The time it takes a train to go through the depots. If you stop a train in the depot it will be at one end of the depot and not the other.
I have worked on trying to make depots act more like stations and i know it is possible but i just haven’t been able to get the trains to exit the station depot properly.

Re: Faking Drive Through Depots
How about allowing stations to do service work as well (if needed, and of course take extra time to do it)? No clue how realistic it'd be, but a tiny house that can fit 16 million trains aint that realistic either

Re: Faking Drive Through Depots
I think that would probably be the easiest, maybe best, solution. Then depot graphics can easily be drawn as station GRFS. You would need to make sure, though, that the train doesnt drop/collect cargo when it entered that station. Maybe attach that to the 'service' command in the orders.neuron wrote:How about allowing stations to do service work as well
