I am currently studying at university and as a project for this term we've got to develop a game. I will skip unnecessary details but the main idea is to have a multi-player game where players are responsible for districts. I am fan of openttd for a long time and thought that its graphical engine is perfectly suitable for generating landscapes and towns. The players won't be able to build their districts directly, rather only influence some aspects. Everything else should generated. Do you think it is possible to use the engine for such purposes? I have not looked into code yet so I am not quite sure that it is possible to extract only the necessary part (it IS possible, of course, but we have limited time and human resources).
And, of course, we are not talking about plagiarism. Our project is going to be GPL based and only the client is supposed to be built on openttd code base. If the engine is going to be used all credits will go to the development team of openttd. The main focus of our project is not build a complete system, rather a prototype and the client is practically only responsible of generating world from the server data and handling user interactions. There are plenty of other sub-systems that handle other aspects. All in all, one fascinating idea...
Please reply if you have any experience that is similar or know a better engine for such purposes.

You may want to take a look at kyra.

Also remember, that though OpenTTD code is on open license, the graphic sprites are not, which may cause some legal problems for your project. Apart from that: good luck

Re: A new game based on OpenTTD engine
Unfortunately the graphics engine of this game is pretty much the only thing not GPLed and developed by the wonderful OpenTTD team. You still need an origina copy of Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Atari holds the copyrights right now afaik) for the graphics.If the engine is going to be used all credits will go to the development team of openttd

"Graphics" != "Graphics engine", Chris.
And you may want to check with a competent lawyer before using any OpenTTD code. It is not entirely clear whether ludde actually had the right to release OpenTTD's code under the GPL.

To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.
