Question regarding old map array issue

Hi there,

I posted this pic a long time ago as a suggestion of layout down different track types onto 1 square.

But I got told that it would be available in the 'magical' new map array. But since that was 2004 and thus is 3 years ago, I would like to ask if this is still possible to have?
About the issue is that what are the current developments about the matter of the map array? I heard it was not discontinued but entirely scrapped or something. If that was to be true, then what else is planned?

So long story short: What are the current developments and concepts about the old map array issue? :)

Technically possible (map bits wise), would probably result in some slowdown in all rail pathfinders, no sprites that (directly) support it. Making new sprites will probably result in ugly rails because when a newgrf is loaded that replaces the rails, those "new" sprites with two tracks on it won't (most likely) be replaced by the newgrfs. Even in that case if I have a newgrf that replaces elrail and one that replaces maglev, you still get into trouble.

So actually more trouble than benefits in the end I think. :)

that's why i'm a supporter of layered graphics, so you could build anything on the same tile without having to do all the possible combinations, like rail over roads, different diagonal rails etc...
less sprites and better flexibility but compatibility with grf goes TFU
