A very interesting disused stations site (UK)
For some reason, looking at photographs of disused stations and platforms can be really interesting, particularly for anyone with an interest in London Underground. This site has got some great pictures and station info for a wide variety of stations all over the UK, are there any local to you?
http://www.railaroundbirmingham.co.uk is brilliant for stations in the West Midlands.
It even has a map:

Owen - for St Andrews try http://www.railscot.co.uk/Anstruther_an ... /frame.htm
Railscot is a good site with linked clickable maps of old lines in Scoltand and some in England. The author tries to trace or visit old station sites.

Re: A very interesting disused stations site (UK)
Sorry to bring up an old thread, but this is a fascinating subject for me. I love studying old stations and railways and think what could have been if they had survived.
I was about to start a thread asking how much interest people had on the subject...but thanks to the good old search function, i can see that people do!
Anyway, i've trawled the internet, the site listed above is a bit of a bible on the subect!
I have a particulalr interest in disused railways and stations for where i grew up on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. In fact, this is an excellent website for that area:
http://web.ukonline.co.uk/berneyarms/ht ... ailway.htm
However, i'm a bit baffled by one or two things. I can find nothing or no pictures of Norwich Victoria station or Norwich City Station. Can find quite a bit on Great Yarmouth's three stations. Also quite stuck on Lowestoft North...though that wasn't a major station. I was surprised i couldn't find any good pictures of Melton Constable considering its history.
Also, the village i live in now lies on the path of the old Stafford to Wellington railway. Even a study in the local library bought up little on it, (although found some great photos of Newport Station (Shropshire) in there).
Anyone help? Anyone else have an interest on this subject and interested in discussing it further?

I'm also interested in the subject. The book "Branch lines around Cromer" has a fair amount of detail about Melton Constable, it's published by Middleton press (I found my edition in Jarrolds, I'm sure you know where that is!
)
There is also a book about the M&GN which would cover Melton Constable* and Norwich City
As for Norwich Victoria, it closed early to passengers and later goods (in 1960s so not much will remain). The millenium library in norwich has a number of interesting books though.
*Nothing really remains of the station except some M&GN brackets in the shelter and the water tower. A number of sheds from the old works remain though.

Re: A very interesting disused stations site (UK)
I think this is a fascinating subject, one of the most interesting parts of railway history. The Subterreanea Britannica site is very good and continues to improve - even my own village (Ushaw Moor) is well photographed there. Plus I have a general liking for old photos.
Gord - perhaps you could try your local library or county record office - they may have trackplans or photographs of the stations you are interested in there. Certainly old OS maps can tell you a lot, and have often got quite detailed trackplans depending on the scale used. Again your local library should have some. Annoyingly there used to be a website that let you look at Ordinance survey maps for sometime in the 19th century for anywhere in the UK but I can't find it now - anyone know this site?

Like I say, I know you are an east anglian, Gord so the millenium library in Norwich is a great place to look.

Re: A very interesting disused stations site (UK)
I just found out that during reconstruction work on Leeds City Station, a temporary one was built a few hundred metres up the line (which explains the gated-off tracks I always wondered about every time my GNER/NX train trundled past. Should be able to find loads of resources on this one online, so I'm off to have a look now!
Nice to be back on the snazzy new TT-Forums

I keep meaning to give the new lirbary a visit..i still haven't been in there and how long has it been open?Ameecher wrote:Like I say, I know you are an east anglian, Gord so the millenium library in Norwich is a great place to look.
I'm in Norwich next week, only for a day though...and i've family coming up from Lowestoft to meet me there, so i probably won't have time.
Like i've said, i've already nosed around around Newport library (Telford and Wrekin), but it might be worth going to the main library in Stafford.
I also remember Lowestoft having a superb record office, next time i'm back there i may give it a visit.
Another old line i'm interested in is the Great Central and some of the large stations like Nottingham Victoria that used to stand on it. However, i have in-laws in Woodford Halse and go there regularly, and like Melton Constable, i believe Woodford Halse has a rich railway history too.
Thanks for you replies and interest. And yes, i still see myself as an East Anglian, or more a Lowestoftian!....even if Lowestoft still manages to annoy me after 5 minutes of being there!
