Even Bigger Maps/ Even More (Custom-Named) Towns

Post by bogdans »

Hey - the 2048x2048 maps are amazing, but I want more. Call me crazy, but would there be a possibility to go for maps size 8192x8192? I know that would take up a lot more RAM, but maybe it's possible to push this even harder.

There's already patches 'fixing' this 'flaw'.
Btw, which pc do you have? 2048x2048 map with medium transport density is already unplayable on hi-end pcs...
- It's hot as hell in here.
- You see it too? For me, it's always like this.

Do you mean a 2084*2084 map is too small for you? Do you perhaps have a savegame of a full 2084*2048 map? :D

Don't ask the same things over and over again please. I wanted them too, but you need a super PC (not available yet for sale) for such maps. Even current big size maps do not work properly when vehicles start to become too many to handle and forget savegames. Gone will be your vehicles...
Another guy (I forget his name now) has made a patch, go get it and recompile, and after you play for a while don't blame me if you have to reboot/power off your PC.
Counsel if you try it do not generate random game. Generate a map and place 12 - 16 towns and corresponding industries. We will be waiting for your results.

>> Nickel_Plate - thanks, will try!
>> athanasios -- no need to be patronizing, I did do a search, but simply did not find anything. Jeez!
>> BBoy Symm - I do have a couple of on-going 2048x2048 games, using Italy, US or Africa scenarios - will post soon! I don't mean to say I've completed them all, but I want stuff to be more real. The 2048 maps are good enough already, but I'm trying for something even better. Such monster scenarios would obviously only be suitable for continents - but imagine how cool it would be to have a map of Europe or of North America with all cities and villages on it. It would take you several years to build a comprehensive grid, but for me at least, the fun would never wear out :D
>> DarkFenX - I play this game on kick-ass computers at my school and so far things have been alright with RAM. Even my laptop (Celeron 1.6GHz, 512MB RAM) works just fine with over 500 trains on a map. I do understand my demands would probably require a supercomputer though.

On another note, is there a patch for more than 500 towns? I'm working on a Spain scenario right not, and because of the wonderful heightmap I was able to generate I feel like putting all the small towns and villages in Spain on the map!

Fair enough. That would make a hell lot of money, wouldn't it :o But for me, a 1024*1024 is big enough, atm. :)

You can have as many towns as you like. You just can't use more than 500 custom names.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

>>dalestan -- yeah, I know what you're saying, but it's custom names I need. It really doesn't help if you're doing a map of Spain if your towns are called Runtfingbourne and Slerdinghatan (or whatever contrived name TT makes up)

Have you tried setting the town-name generator to Spanish, not English?

Oh, sorry, that was not the point - I want my towns to be consistent with the map, at least namewise. I need more custom names! Pretty please! Could anyone just do a recompile of the whole thing with that array changed to like 2000? I tried to compile and couldn't follow the instructions :(.

Perhaps if you allow the map to use names from two (or more) languages?

I don't know, I was just giving an idea, so you could work it out. :P I'm not a coder, but it doesn't seem that difficult.

So -- I took things into my own hands. I've compiled version 0.5 with a names_array (in misc.c) set at 4096 elements instead of 512. This should be enough, I guess -- I haven't had a chance to test it (I still need a couple of hundred towns to get there, but I will), but the re-compiled executable can be found at:
http://www.amherst.edu/~bstate09/OTTD/openttd.exe

I am currently working on a monster scenario, but I don't know if it will be playable without the recompiled OTTD.

If you want to publish it so others can play it might be important that it's playable with 0.5.0 or an recent nightly build

Oh, sorry, the executable I've published is compiled from OTTD 0.5 -- I've just replaced the executable and the game is working just fine. It will take a while for me to actually finish laying out all the towns, but I'm getting there.

Hmm, what I want to say was that it is imho better to create scenarios with a version that most people are playing with :) Well that's not possible in your case, because of that custom names limit so I can understand your reasons for making your own version.
Anyways - I hope you get your map finished the way you want it.
