Hi, long time player, first time poster.
Anyway, I would like to suggest high speed trains that run in vacuum tunnels. The advantage? No air resistance so incredibly high speeds are capable, in theory. If the game has a lifespan later than 2050 then why not introduce a new technology?
To see what I'm on about, here a wiki page;

Also, are traffic lights in tunnels possible? At the moment they just aren't a feasible way of having an effective rail network.
Thanks,
B

I actually played with the thought of vaccum tubes, and the way I would do it is as a extenstion of the maglev system. Like how Electrifed railways is to... vanilla railways.
And probably with heavy limits on the vaccum tunnels as well, so players don't drag and convert everything... and use it for long rather straight lines (or at least a lines with not too many sharp turns).
Also, they would have to use specialized trains that is little bit more expensive, but can run both on both maglev tracks and into vaccum tunnels. (I would imagine that you would get blue passengers if you use a train that isn't made for the vaccum.
