Disable PBS Auto-Conversion

Post by FunMaker »

It would be great if there would be another switch to totaly turn of the auto-conversion.

It's going on my nervs if there is a junction, where one PBS Signal is manually set and then a train comes in...
The Result is that 10-15 Pieces of track are now PB'ed because i did something wrong with the signaling, and i can't turn it back:
If i'm resetting one signal and a train comes in somewhere the signal turns back in a PBS signal again.
The only way is to stop all trains and remove every PBS signal then let the trains go on...And if i missed a signal, i have to do it it all over again.
Well the best way is to demolish every peace of track in the area and redo the whole junction.

Ok, this doesn't happen everywhere but i got it ~20-25 times in a 1950-2050 game

Disabling junction-based-PBS-promotion is absolutely begging for crashes.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Can't you turn the PBS off anyway?

Indeed. Trains entering the junction through a non-PBS signal will not reserve paths. Then a train approaching the PBS signal will reserve one, but it doesn't know that there's already a train in the junction. Result: crash.

You know you can reset signals quickly by ctrl-removing them? Combined with build-while-paused, that should make de-PBSing a junction pretty easy.

I just ctrl-click the signals to convert them back to standard signals. Just ensure the junction is clear and click away. I almost always save the game first just incase I cause a crash...it's easy to do. As I'm always redesigning track I sometimes get a rogue pbs signal in the wrong place (my fault) and I prefer to remove it so it doesn't cause any mischief.

Can someone explain to me how PBS is ever a bad thing?

Well, it can be a nightmare at first, learning how it all works. My first experiments caused lost trains and one or two crashes...

...but now I depend on it entirely. Having multiple trains occupying the same entrance block at stations is a real joy. It also speeds up a lot of trains as they can avoid being blocked by each other...

I've recently been trying OTTD (I presume I can mention that here...) and the current version doesn't have PBS available in the regular version, and it's a real pain.

I prefer playing with my own designs and so disabled autoconverting completely...

Ohh and I use extpresignals only, so I aswell set my presignals completly myself ... ;)

It uses more processing power than regular junctions, so on simple junctions where it would make no difference (one exit or one entrance) it's a waste. Also, PBS can sometimes cause pathfinding issues with complex layouts.
