Autorenew issues

I am having some trouble with the autorenew train. I set it to renew 12 months. A train will go into a depot, and then come out with engines in place of all the wagons. If I set it to anything besides 12, the trains seem to not renew themselves at all.

I doubt i've ever read one of the "sticky" topics either. I think one of the dev's pointed me in that direction a long time ago (and has regretted it ever since ).
