Monorail / MagLev?

I've seen several savegames and played many games with both of these technologies, but if you start the game from the beggining, how do you get them? Do you have to buy them, or are they just 'invented'?
If so, what year are they invented in?

It really depends.

In normal TT, The monorail is invented in 2001, and the maglev in 2010. Pretty much, a new train is invented, and when it is avaliable, a new track type can be built to accommodate it.

In patched TT, with electrified rails, you will only get one system, and both train types will run on it. For more info, read the manual that comes with the patch.

That is not entirely correct. The monorail is invented somewhere around 2000, give or take a few years. The maglev is invented around 2020. As with every other vehicle that is invented in the game, there is no exact date of invention, as it varies from game to game (+- ~2 years).

in TTO monorail comes at year 2001
in TTD it comes at 1998
