Create a town -button

Post by eQualizer »

Would it be possible to add a tool to create new citys while playing? Just like in the editor.
It would rock.

And its relevance to being a transport company would be????

Could be entered as a cheat, and would possibly be useful for debugging :)

I mean in-game? How would it be in any way slightly realistic that a transport company can build a new town?

Is OTTD meant to be realistic?

well, apart from the Toyland graphics; yes it at least tries to achieve a certain level and be coherent with the game's purpose: you are a transport company not some almighty god!

Maybe as a cheat code, but not as a standard game option. Have you ever seen transport company funding a town?
But as for new towns raising spontaneously during a game... that's better idea.

Fulee proudly presents: BuildTownCheat

Devs: you know diff files...

Others: Just dl the zip and overwrite the files in your OTTD dir (Don't forget to backup!)

BTW because the compiled exe is the one I currently use, it has more additions:
- the patch which can be found in the DepotSignals thread
- 'Turbo'FastForward: when you press shift during fast forward, the game doesn't redraw more than once in 30ms and doesn't animate
- takeover player_number console command because I got annoyed when played with my brother and after loadgame he got a new company instead of the old one :) (warning: crashes in single player)
- clone train patch -> clone button in depot (thx to the author!)
- faster town growth (sorry, just had fun messing with this :) )
- you can press CTRL when using the remove signal tool to override the "When dragging place signals every:" patch setting and remove all signals

Have fun!

Is that based on 0.3.4 ? I mean, we can use 0.3.4 lang and gfx files?

Well, I may even stay "at home" - Czech car manufacturer, Škoda, also nearly owns the town where its main factories are (btw. it's fun to look at the map - 1/3 of the map covered by huge green polygon with "Škoda auto" written on it  ). But they usually don't "create" the town, but simply build their factory next to existing town and as the factory grows and needs more employees, the town grows too. They simply give work to people and so more people move in. But I don't think that transport company has a chance to employ as many people on one place as a car manufacturer (e.g. Škoda is not too big car manufacturer and still employs some 20 000 people). And even then, this is already simulated in OTTD - you can build your HQ in the town and that town grows faster (at least I think so).

PS.: hope the post doesn't get messed up when I use diacritics

In a was a situation like this when Kruonis hidropowerplant was being builded the company that constructed it have builded whole city with flats shops and storehouses,
when the plant was completed the workers left and the town is now dead only the powerplant is operating now.

about powerplant(from webpage):

Kruonis

The Kruonis Pumped Storage Power Plant was erected in 1992 and now comprises four units of 200 MW each. It is pumping water from lower reservoir into higher water body (the water head here is more than 100 metres height), when the usage of energy is small. And if the needs of energetic power are very big, it can generate 800 MW in five hours. The Power Plant was designed for 1600 MW of capacity, based on the assumption that four reactors at the Ignalina NPP would be in operation. With the reduced capacity at Ignalina, however, no further increase in capacity at Kruonis is expected in the near future.

OK, but still it's the scenario that company needs lots of employees on one place, and so people move there because they have work there. Not that you pay some money and create a town.
As I wrote above, I think this is simulated good enough by building your HQ in a town.

Small point, but didn't quite a few towns get founded by railroads and stuff in America when they were building their little cross-continental railroad?
