[OTTD] The path to riches. A daylength server AAR
Re: [OTTD] The path to riches. A daylength server AAR
The manufacturing supplies from the glass works are going to be shipped along our new line to a stockyard down south. In the near future, we'll ship livestock here from the mixed farm area. The resulting food will be shipped north to Westwood. This was a very expensive line to build, as a big part of it went straight through more farmland.
Westwood also holds the only junkyard in the neighbourhood, but there's no steel mill nearby yet for it to be of use.
I end with an overview of our lines in 1892. We've seen plenty of construction, and now have a grand total of 12 trains! Our biggest earner is the lumber train, with over $300k per year. While that seems like a lot, adding an extra line to service new industry still costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, easily. You can see the blue lines in the west.
I've said the game was on hard, and the count shows it: 9 bankruptcies so far. Some of those were novices, but others were veteran players.
Speaking of Westwood, we've moved in too late! The blue player has started services in town already, as you can see here.
He's shipping in food from a harbor down west. This may seem bad for business, but in the long term the extra growing potential should ensure competition isn't a big deal, at least not in cities. We add a horse carriage to service the town. It'll definitely run at a loss, but it will keep ratings up, which we will need to do all the construction we need (town authority is set on hostile). Our passenger station in the east isn't connected to anything yet, it was built to reserve the space. As soon as Westwood starts growing, we will likely connect it up to Forest in the east, which is another desert town.Westwood also holds the only junkyard in the neighbourhood, but there's no steel mill nearby yet for it to be of use.

Command and Transport: Tiberium Trucks?
Re: [OTTD] The path to riches. A daylength server AAR
If tiberium trucks turned up on tt we'd have to go to Red Alert.

Heh, that's what popped first into my mind too. Though it makes sense there's an actual town where the name comes from. But ofcourse blue isn't EA! if anything we'd buy their blue behinds outdavidx123 wrote: Is the Blue players name is EA?

We're back in August 1897. We're doing great! we're number one income wise, and our industries are growing swimmingly. Now that we're swimming in money, in honor of his good service, we erect a statue of our manager Tillens in Paris. Then we fire him. I mean, we do have a company to run!

It's time for new management!
Meet Munro Wilkie. His family has been in cattle shipment for a few generations now, starting out as cowboys. Our new goals will be shipping large amounts of cattle from the Mixed farms to the stockyard. The resulting beef will be shipped to Westwood.
The lime kiln is producing well... One could say too well. whoops, way too many farm supplies waiting at the Kiln. We extend the chemicals train with more wagons, and link up more farms to be supplied. This is a problem, as we can only have 100 road vehicles total (see first post for the limits). this means the current supply solution of one truck per farm won't do in the long run. But for now, setting up these lines is the most important task.
Our plans are just a question of extending existing stations, so no plans are drawn up. This immediately results in the crash of two trains. Double whoops. We hope this doesn't set the tone for Wilkie's leadership!

The 6-horse carriage in Westwood is losing money, and it's very unwieldy. So we opt to place a tram system, which is much more room-efficient. Currently they're slower than express carriages, but we feel confident that in the near future we'll get some faster trams. You can also see the new cargo trams that slowly provide the town with the newly transported beef from Westwood Exchange.
After clearing out the train accident debris, we remodel the Paris farm depot (formerly known as the first forest station). It is now more accessible and has enough platforms for the planned expansions.
To deal with the extra trucks that transport cattle, the farms get a extra lorry stops. The single ones could do in a pinch, but if supply trucks get stuck behind loading trucks, that will seriously slow down delivery. They'll eventually pass through, but the delay could be enough to break supply service for the furthest farms.[continued next post]

Re: [OTTD] The path to riches. A daylength server AAR
After a major construction effort to incorporate a textile mill south of our network and routing plant fibres there, we finally get our first goods service up and running!
this is the tram that maintains the service. It's pretty much identical to the food trams, with the exact same orders, but the cargo can't mix! I guess it would explode?
In honor of achieving the first goals that the company set out on 30 years ago, we erect a statue of Wilkie in Westwood. We have to evict some people, but eventually the town will agree it's for the best.

At this time, in 1900, our proud company opens up the southern WBO (Wife Branch Office). Operating out of heidelberg far to the south of our network, they will operate an oil line and extend it to create local food and goods. This part of the network will initially be set up by my wife, so I'll leave it out of the report until it becomes relevant.

Now that Westwood is supplied with both food and goods, we want it to start growing as fast as we can. So we start a building funding campaign. Brown lampposts on dirt are hard to see, and there's no sidewalks in the desert, which makes the effect of the funding awfully hard to see.
In tandem with our focus shift, we move the HQ to Westwood Exchange. And build it a bit bigger, while we're at it. The world should see our status!
In 1900 we also get prototype versions for a flatbed truck that carries twice the load of the horse carts, and a new cargo tram. We deploy them immediately. This results in the slaughter of around 80 horses. in other words, another half trainload full of meat. The first reaction of Westwood citizens to the goods and food is a mass exodus - population drops to 264. But that's deceiving, new houses are being built on top of old ones.[continued next post]

Re: [OTTD] The path to riches. A daylength server AAR
In 1901, lady luck smiles on us. A new refinery is being setup just outside Paris!
Thankfully, we don't have to look far. There's an oil well just south of the stockyard, so we can extend the line for our food trains to link up an oil well. After adding the train, we also setup a supplies service, by making our supplies train for the northern mines also visit these wells. We're confident we can do this without impacting our supply deliveries, since we have over a thousand crates of them sitting on the station, waiting on the trucks!
Besides this, the only major construction that we do is plan out a track line to the desert town Forest to the east. Since we'll be using more expensive tracks for this, planning is a lot cheaper to avoid mistakes. Too bad NuTracks isn't really done yet; not having a mouse icon when using planning tracks is annoying! And we can't plan in the stations, as the tracks appear as maglev.
I'll end this report with an overview of the network. The arrows show the oil wells in the south and the refinery near paris. The circle indicates the textile mill at West Point where we create fabric goods for Westwood.
Next time we'll probably create our first passenger line. The costs will be astronomical!
thanks for reading

Westwood-Forest lines
we get to the game late, stupid real life. It's now 1911! We're still number 1 in income. Which means others have been slacking off as well. Phew. Yellow is coming close though.
We hire new management for a radical change in philosophy: Coleman Carson His mission statement and our new goal, passenger lines!
We first build out the planned line to Forest, using the fastest track we have (75 mph, no catenary). The construction costs are massive. And this is excluding terraforming and bulldozing! [continued next post]

Re: [OTTD] The path to riches. A daylength server AAR
To supply our new main passenger line with enough passengers, a subway route is constructed around Westwood. When playing with 2cc and NuTracks, the metro is a cheap solution to moving large amounts of passengers with little room. The 2 carriage metro train can hold 250 passengers! Eventually this will be in the middle of town as it grows.
The livestock at Paris Depot is piling up (strange mental image), so we add a third livestock train with the clone tool. Or so we attempted. It turns out our trusty Consolidation engine is no longer available! We wait a bit on creating the new train to mull over how to replace our locomotive pool. A new fast intercity train is built and set to full load at Westwood, and route to Forest. [continued next post]

Re: [OTTD] The path to riches. A daylength server AAR
A tram network is added to Forest. After a lot of construction, we think to set up a line to supply goods and food. The setup failed, Forest authority refuses, doh!
First intercity trip pays $30k. As always, passengers are worth more than their weight in gold. That the Consolidation is no longer available as a locomotive is annoying, as the newer trains either go 50 mph with half the horsepower, or 31mph with more horsepower. The end of the line loco is the SBB A 3/5 with 1300 hp and a top speed of 62 mph. It's what we're using on our passenger line. However, our cargo lines all have the slowest tracks, so it won't be able to use all of that speed.
But slowing down is not really an option, and less horsepower isn't either. Since we make enough money, we give the order to start replacing all our Consolidation loco's with the new expensive models.
We order all our trains in for servicing. This isn't very efficient, but we want them replaced fast. The old Consolidation only has a 44% reliability rating left and we want to be able to do lazy 'clone' orders to create more trains where needed. After replacing, we clone up a new livestock train.

Re: [OTTD] The path to riches. A daylength server AAR
In an attempt to at least build a simple cargo stop for food and goods in Forest, we initiate a grand plantation project. After paying hundreds of thousands of dollars for plants, it still wasn't good enough.
[continued next post]
A station at Heidelberg is built to anticipate connecting to the WBO network. There isn't any local food or goods input yet, but receiving passengers from Westwood should still bring in a sizeable amount of money.
Planning the line to Heidelberg takes a lot of time, and is very costly! Here's an overview of our construction costs so far.
21 million dollars! for one new line, and another upgraded. 60 million dollars seems a lot, but at this rate, it'll still disappear real soon.[continued next post]
Re: [OTTD] The path to riches. A daylength server AAR
The new express line passes by the Texture Mills station. This station is growing busier by the year, as more plant fibres are dropped off and more goods train pick up crates.
Right before we plan to call it a night, an interesting popup. Flight appears in 1912. zeppelins are horrible at our settings - 1/4 speed so they can hardly make money, and with 8x running costs are a downright loss.

The feeder systems (beside the subway, the tram now also feeds central station) is really heaping on the passengers at Westwood Central. This is great news for our intercity trains!
Forest has tons of food waiting at Forest Exchange, but they won't allow building a cargo stop to start moving it into town. They'd rather starve Right before we plan to call it a night, an interesting popup.
