Patchman wrote:If you can fix it by building a depot just ahead of the train, then it's not the problem I'm looking for, it's just stupid pathfinding of trains and giving up on depots too easily. However if it doesn't go to a depot even when passing several on its route, then it sounds like this bug.
I was the original poster in this thread and have not had the same problem in several games with not having any autorenew at all.

I do see road vehicles that get old and pass directly by a depot, or several, and do not enter and renew. It's almost like they prefer the depot they were built in and if it's not in their current route they will not enter any others in their current route. Also the depots all get named the same in a city. I wonder if this is a internal problem and maybe they need a unique name or something.

For an example let's say they were built in "newcity" depot which was the first created and later when they pass another named 'newcity' depot it's not interally named the same so it passes it up. Just a thought.

All the road vehicle problems I've been having are to do with them not going into depots at all - at least as they continue making me money I presume they aren't going round in circles.

I think the train problem I described yesterday must be a different bug to the autorenew one then. I think that when trains fail to autorenew they do continue to make money, but I'll check. I've started a new game now (adn I'm back at work tomorrow) so it may be soem time before I get into autorenew problems as I don't recall having any before the 1980s (I'm currently in 1941 and still have no trains, but 105 rvs!)

I may or may not have the same problem. I have my autorenew set using TTDXC to "After several messages," but I have NEVER had a loco autorenew. I generally get tired of waiting and do it myself manually. How long is "several messages"? I'm not using the custom maintenance interval since it can't be set by vehicle type without cheating.

Zetor, a train will autorenew only by visiting a depot. If it is stopped it cant' get to the depot to renew, thats not a problem.

I have my autorenew set at -6 months (probably called "after first" in the configurator), and the vast amjority of my vehicles autorenew without incident. This is the case in 2.1 beta 5, alpha 9vcs1 and the alpha I was using before that (alpha 6? check earlier in teh thread!)

I have my servicing interval set to 16000 days or whatever it is, and play with breakdowns off. I frequently have depots at station entrance/exit junctions and along long stretches of track for trains. RV and ship depots are usually very close to at least one of the stations vehicles call at.

What does it actually say in the ttdpatch.cfg file? The first message is at -12 months on that scale, the second at 0 months and then every 12 months after that. Do you have 'forceautorenew' on as well?

krtaylor's config wrote: forceautorenew=1
autorenew=15
servint=off
you do have forceautorenew on.

autorenew=15 will mean vehicles get renewed three months after the vehicle "is very old and urgently needs replacing" message.

next time you play, try setting it to a lower value.
less than -12 and you will never see a message
-12 = you should see the "vehicle is getting old" message, and it will head to the depot at the same time (if the vehicle has a 10 year life, it will be 9 years old at this point)
-6 = 6 months after the "getting old" message it will head for the depot (9½ years of 10 year life)
0 = it will head for the depot at the same time teh "very old" message is displayed (10 / 10)
6 = 6 months after the vehicle is "very old" it will head for the depot (10½ / 10)
12 = it will head for the depot at the same time the "urgenently needs replaceing" message is shown. (11 / 10)
15 = it will head for the depot three months after teh "urgently needs replacing message) (11¼ / 10)
24 = it will head for the depot at the same time teh second "urgently needs replacing message" (12/10)
36 = (13/10)
etc

So, forceautorenew is in fact supposed to be on, right? I never edit the file directly, I use TTDSC. I'll set that setting one lower down.

forceautorenew will only make vehicle to go to the depot immiedatly when they will be old enough ... but without it vehicle will be replaced when someday it enters the depot

And if you have servint 16000 or 32000 that could be a long time in coming.

I've just had my earliest autorenew problem yet - 1956 (start year 1930)
Its a mail van, on a short journey between adjacent towns (York and Gloucester), with those two stations its only orders.

There is a depot very close to both stations on its route, although the one it was built in was demolished to make way for a train station (trains didn't arrive until ~1948).

After a lot of effort I've managed to get a copy of the config and savegame. I haven't got the newgrf.cfg, but this is a standard vehicle, as are all RVs I've built so far.

its 2.0 beta 5 (DOS) runnign in the tropical climate.

Chris

edit: I forgot to add the cfg first time :oops:

Are you talking about road vehicle 48? That's not an autorenew problem, it just can't find the depot. So it's a pathfinding problem. When it decides to go to a depot it decides "bah, never gonna find it" after a while, which in this case unfortunately happens just before it gets there... just build another depot and it'll autorenew.

In general, if building a depot solves the problem, it's not an autorenew problem but pathfinding/depot finding that's wrong.

What do you expect for pathfinding in a game made in 1995?
