However, considering the original post, I wouldn't class the OP as particularly tech-savvy. While overclocking may seem simple to you, you pretty much made the point in your last post that things can go bad if you don't atleast have some understanding of what you're doing. Coupled with the fact that overclocking can cause a system to be more unstable (which is the last thing you want for someone with limited troubleshooting skills), and (I'm pretty sure) will void your warranty, its certainly not the perfect solution.

While shopping around seems like the logical thing to do given the responses here, keep in mind that hes buying local, and that the price may include more than just the raw components (such as on-site repairs, tech support etc).

Also, calling people stupid and ignorant for pointing out the potential dangers of overclocking - especially when you concede they do exist - will probably have people putting you in that same category. The fact is, they do exist. Its like telling people its perfectly safe to drive faster than the speed limit.... just don't hit anything!

very intelligent post... indeed I praise praise your approach.

you're right - overclocking isn't exactly for everyone. the gigabyte motherboard I specified actually greatly simplifies the process - the only things one has to adjust would be the CPU host frequency, and the RAM multiplier - which are clearly marked. I also offered to help.

You do have a point about buying it locally - but honestly, there is no reason in this day and age for someone to be savvy enough to fix the basic problems when it comes to computers. Its 2008, not 1998 - over a decade has passed since the rise of the internet and the home computer. I assume though, due to the fact he named all the specific parts - including his choice of operating systems - that he's going to assemble it himself. Apparently he's located in florida which means he doesn't pay tax when ordering from Newegg.

My assessment of peoples intelligence is not meant to be insulting - simply stating the truth. Its pretty ridiculous when people come and mouth off about things they have no clue about... ignorance is not necessarily a bad thing. Its good to have a thirst for knowledge despite being ignorant. But there are people in this world that insist on being ignorant and belligerent ... the best example being:
Comparing performance of overclocked vs stock is a stupid thing to do - I can cool my CPU with Nitrogen Oxide and overclock it three times (though it might terminate the CPU).
Madassasin: (It is assassin you know? Two S's)

No, comparing performance of overclocked versus stock is not stupid - if you get $200 performance for $50, not only are you getting an incredible deal BUT when you want to upgrade you won't feel bad about wasting that additional $150.... $50 CPU isn't such a big deal. Hur.

Secondly, nitrogen oxide is a gas - you can't cool with nitrogen oxide. This is an attempt to seem smart and clever, and failing miserably... liquid nitrogen is the solution people use to cool intensely hot objects - and its not a regular consumer product meaning its pretty damn hard to obtain. Double whammy.

Lastly - no, you can't overclock 3 times for three reasons: you're not gunna get liquid nitrogen because you don't know what you're talking about to begin with. Secondly, you'd be achieving some immense bottleneck somewhere - OR you wouldn't be able to reach the speeds due to a component not being able to handle it, IE CPU voltage barrier, stable bus speed barrier, or something along those lines. Lastly, overclocking a 1.6 Ghz CPU would result in a 4.8 Ghz clock speed - most people are lucky to reach 3.6-4.0 Ghz... no, even the most experienced overclocker knows this is next to impossible and highly unrealistic. So you can take that 2.66 Ghz E8200 that you'd "overclock three times" to ~8 Ghz and shove it, idiot. Hahahaha. Sit down.

Anyways, to remain on-topic: SirXavius, I'm confident that, regardless of your current knowledge, you could easily build the machine I specified or one similar - not only saving time and money, but allowing for great potential upgrades in the future AND achieving insanely superior performance RIGHT NOW. Like I said, feel free to contact me or message me with questions or anything. I've been building custom machines for people for many years, and I can guarantee the performance.

If you knew anything of chemistry (not an insult, just a fact, dummy), you'd understand the fallacy of "nitrogen oxide is a gas." So is nitrogen, at room temperature, or else about 70% of our atmosphere would be liquid and/or solid (and therefore not atmosphere, of course).

Also, 'hard to obtain'? A quick google got me here: http://www.2spi.com/catalog/instruments ... wars.shtml which certainly seems to be, to me, a place to buy liquid nitrogen on the internet. Very difficult yes. Of course if you're paying those types of prices for your N2, you might as well just buy an expensive processor and cut out the run around.

Basically, any modern day syetm will run it. Any syetm 5 year old should run it. Anything over that you may have problems.
What about you? Will you join me when the time comes to be a hero?

Try wine, it handles OTTD very smoothly on my Ubuntu linux, it should do it on mac OS X too. No speed reduction(I couldnt even see any differences ingame), it works even better becouse the native linux OTTD build is lacks of ingame text copy n paste feaure which is very annoying when you add a new server in your server list.

True, Nitrogen is for presentations only. Not for everyday usage.

Overclocking is risky. If not, why doesn't Intel (or AMD) overclock their processors or provide guarantee?

NOTE: As I mentioned the guarantee issue is a bit questionable. How will they know that you overclocked and burned the CPU? Do you think they will get into the details to check it? Provided you have a second CPU and reboot and fix the BIOS settings you are OK and you get a new CPU for free! Of course don't do it again with the same store.

Wow, i come back after a few days and what i thought was a closed subject, and we've deteriorated into a room full of arguers. Shame on you. Someone should have had the class to say "i'm not going to continue braying with jackasses," and not respond.
In case you people didn't know, i had to get a lower-rate processor for not-high-end apps (OTTD being one of a few). But these local dealers have been vary good to me over the years, and i DO want them to make a decent profit. They make money doing what they do best, i save precious time so i can do what i do best, and everybody's happy. That's the American way.

Can we all go back to other threads where we can be of more use...

With the exception of one or two posts, and despite the differences of opinions, all those "jackasses" were trying to give you constructive help.

I'm sure these people will be happy to ignore your posts in the future.

Read the posts again, and mine. See if you can connect the posts' points together. After the decision was made, any opinions to the matter is no longer constructive, especially mixed in with tangential arguments. I thanked those who earned my gratitude BEFORE the decision was made, and all others seems to have hijacked the thread.

And please note, no one called anyone else jackasses; it was part of an analogy.

Very bad analogy. It is evident we do not like your comments. We tried to help you and now this response.

A little try to turn thread on better way, mine thoughts about HW and OpenTTD:

CPU: Far most important, OpenTTD will benefit from faster CPU, will benefit from 64-bit CPU (if using appropriate bulid), will benefit a bit form double-core (as in case of high CPU use performance eating processes can move to second core), will not benefit form more than 2 cores
RAM: not so much relevant, even with largest possible map OpenTTD will not use more than 100 MB RAM
Video card: not so much relevant, maybe on-board use a bit more of CPU
HDD:a bit relevant, more space for saves is useful

to clarify: Have any CPU spec. except clock rate have impact for OpenTTD? Have any RAM spec (except at least 128 MB size) impact? Have HDD speed any impact?
