But 5% of 2gb is approx 100mb less, which sounds like less downloading. I guess tho, that zip/rar/7ziping etc is only useful with big files?DaleStan wrote:Not by much though. Admittedly, it's a small sample size, but the 7 PNG files I just rared up lost approximately 5% of their original size.Killer 11 wrote:Erm PNG CAN be compresed
Sergej_S, those screenshots look very nice. Can't wait for the official 32-bpp release!
Keep up the good work!

At 8Mbps (approximately my maximum attainable speed), 2 GB would take 34:08 to download. Assuming 5% compression, the compressed version would take 32:25 to download. With those transfer times, the 1:42 compression saves is only worth the effort if all other things are equal. If Open can read the 2GB version directly, but not the 1.9GB, it's probably not worth the hassle.
Usually, compression is only useful if you're using it as a container or if you're getting ~15% or more compression. (Backup media is an obvious exception here.) Frequency of use and speed of decompression are major factors in determining where to place the cut off.

To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Fair enough. Not worth it I guess...
I suppose that 2.5gb(ish) of Sergej_S's openttd is mostly dev files though...

I already answered some times this question in the summer of the last year on Russian forum.
I demonstrate once again change of the size of one staff
At transition with 8-bit on 32-bit on an example of a water tower:
The first file - technology 8-bit - 2 Кб...
The second file - technology 32-bit - 85 Кб...
Pay attention to the sizes of files...
The size has increased in 40 times!!!
And it goes speech only about one staff...
The platform OpenTTD 32bpp contains about 6 000 staff...
Now mentally multiplication - 85 * 6 000 = 510 Mb,
And it only minimal size...
Ancient 8-bit technology is necessary really to expect, that if
" Chris Sawyers Locomotion " borrows(occupies) complete CD-Rom, why 32-bit of the image
Should have the smaller sizes???
I hope - has answered your questions...
There will be questions still - address...
Yours faithfully!
Sergej.

Tough i dunno if it's compresed in the .TAR already...
Let's stop conversations on compression of the images!!!
The files TAR are not compressed, I work with WinRar - difference no more than 3-4 % is obviously senselessly!!!
It is necessary really to look at a Thing!!!
There is no a lot of good image in the small sizes!!!

Looking back, looking forward
It has been some time since I last posted on this forum. I would like to add some kind words to those who have made all the work on 32-bpp possible and propose some future developments.
First of all, I understand it must have been a Herculan task to bring the game to 32-bpp. Some years ago I looked into the graphics code, but everything was so 'static' that I couldn't figure out where to begin the changes.
As Alltaken said, it was a post from me that seemed to have started it all: http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php? ... ht=#214035
Looking back, and seeing all the progress, I must say that the honours lay with all the graphic artists, coders, managers (AllTaken has done so much work) and enthusiasts giving feedback. It's interesting to note that in my original post, I was already afraid that the size of the sprites might pose a future problem. In my post I thought the increase in size would be around 16-times the current sprite-set. Since many of the sprites have increased its tile-size and the width of the tiles has become 256 pixels, the increase could be better estimated as 64 to 100 times the original size.
Even though I feel I have not much right to speak at this moment, given all the work which I have NOT been involved in, I would still like to propose the addition of curved tiles, which is also discussed in the above mentioned post.
Also, on http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php? ... ht=#214715 I proposed a scheme for adding shadows. Although much of the artwork is in sprite-form, would we be able to standardize the originating 3D models, we could use the above algorithm to retrieve shadow-maps to be placed on the surrounding tiles.
Finishing this post I would like to express my hopes that the changes Sergei has made will soon be made available to all the OTTD enthousiasts. I understand however, all the problems that might be related to doing this (especially concerning the size of the sprites).

Thanks for your good words and also wanted to say, that yours the first graphic jobs very remarkable!
Whether was saved what нибудь from that time?

Thank you! I'm afraid I cannot translate the last line you wrote, could you phrase it differently (or maybe write it in German)?Sergej_S wrote: Thanks for your good words and also wanted to say, that yours the first graphic jobs very remarkable!

German language I learned(taught) very much for a long time, at school. In our city practically all schools were with German language.mauddib wrote: Thank you! I'm afraid I cannot translate the last line you wrote, could you phrase it differently (or maybe write it in German)?
Now I know English better, than German.
I wanted to learn(find out), whether there were files PNG, size 256*256 points, 32-bit of colour,
From your jobs, that it was possible to use them in a graphic set?
Sergej
