Slovak has none of the problems listed above.

Because, you go down into a car, where as you walk onto a train/bus? Probably due to the fact you go straight into the seat, whereas theoretically you can stand on a bus, train, plane, boat, etc.Redirect Left wrote:Why do we get IN cars, but ON trains? Why can't we also get on a car, or in a train?
Because it's the English language, and it follows no common rule whatsoever?Redirect Left wrote:Why do we say the alarm is "going off" when its obviously going on and not off?

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
At least the Javanese language had two words to use for such (which are also used in Indonesian, in modified form) : "tumpak" (tumpang), which refers to be "in" or "on", and tunggang (also tunggang), which strictly refers "on". While the later is used for animals only now, back then someone would still say "tunggang sepur" (on a train) and/or "tunggang bis" (on a bus), which given the meaning and associated acts, sounds really funny now...
In usual Indonesian, "naik" is safely used for all cases, with "tunggang" used for animals only and "tumpang" refers to given a ride by someone else. (but passengers are "penumpang", and "menumpangi" is better than "menaiki".)
English are confusing ? Be glad that they're descriptive - if you do the wrong one long enough it'll sound right
But yes, the root seems to came from the higher floors of busses and trains, so you have to get on them in ways.

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Can someone explain Fidget Spinners to me? No, not what they are. Why they suddenly became a massive hit and are so talked about? It's the strangest hype.
My Scenarios:
Archipiélago Hermoso (Latest Release: Version 3.2)
Turnpike Falls (Latest Release: Version 0.91)
Re: The Thread Of Randomness
I imagine the hype is because they're a toy that can be easily concealed and taken into the classroom, I know a lot of schools in Manchester have started banning them (thanks to the MEN and their articles about anything in Manchester... you can't breath without an article from them). Lots of parents are unhappy, because their kids get them taken off them, and not given back; the kids own fault if they are stupid enough to get caught in my opinion.Chrill wrote:Can someone explain Fidget Spinners to me? Eeee, Back in my day it was all about Tamagotchi's (do they still exist?) in primary school, then who had the best/newest phone in High school.
Re: The Thread Of Randomness
The Fidget Spinner definitely feels like a 90s trend. It doesn't feel very 2017

Archipiélago Hermoso (Latest Release: Version 3.2)
Turnpike Falls (Latest Release: Version 0.91)

Yes. I have one.Pilot wrote: Eeee, Back in my day it was all about Tamagotchi's (do they still exist?) in primary school, then who had the best/newest phone in High school.
It's also still alive!
When I was at school, if you had a polyphonic ringtone you were the boss of the classroom. (Yes. I am now that old).
Re: The Thread Of Randomness
Wikipedia says Fidget Spinner as a fidgeting tool ("releasing stress" (?!?!)). So are people more stressful these days ?
But I've saw some videos people doing "tricks" on them - basically it's like yo-yo without ropes that way. In that case then it's the same problem everyone has had during their life I think

Reminds me of the little skateboards for the fingers, with all the kids trying to pull tricks with them and failing, and even if they pulled something off it didn't look all that impressive because it was all very split-second stuff.YNM wrote:Wikipedia says Fidget Spinner as a fidgeting tool ("releasing stress" (?!?!)). Good ole cards or something is somehow usually more popular when you got somewhat older.

Which brings me to how we transitioned to playing poker during for pennies during breaks. It eventually got so popular kids from other classes would come to play with us, we even decorated the place like a casino.
That was a terrible plan because teachers figured it out pretty much instantly, took our cards and lowered our behavior grades for gambling.

Re: The Thread Of Randomness
I... guess none of us here ever got too far to that point
(maybe some but I haven't see any directly !)
But... I suppose it have something to do with complexity. And segregation. Those moving plays are meant for slight exercise -which you just end up playing sports anyway (either that or you stuck to computers or something on the desk XD). While on complexity level you find something more challenging - old doesn't mean it's boring !

On an unrelated note, what's up with the spam ? Is it something to do with what the world is going to ?
