Train ticket collection

Post by SwissFan91 »

Morning. Here's the story:

I booked some train tickets on Virgin's website a few weeks ago for travel next Saturday (17th?) - and did self collection at my nearest station. Now, since then, I have lost my card and had it replaced. What are my options now? When I ring Virgin, what can I expect them to offer me? Is it just a case of tough luck?

Any credit card works for collection. At least at FGW stations. We have to book train tickets through this stupid outsourced company at work, and we each just use our own personal credit cards for collection at the station.

Don't ask me why this works...

Try it.

Personally I'd ring whoever you booked the ticket from and explain the situation. They should be able to sort it out.

First thing to do, print off your confirmation email and take it with you when you go to collect. Secondly, allow yourself a bit more time when you go to collect, explain the situation to the ticket office staff, and they should be able to issue the tickets if you give them your new card. I had to collect tickets to Brighton from Victoria station but the machines weren't playing ball- the ticket office staff were still able to issue the tickets though.

I'd go and collect the tickets in advance, don't just deal with it on the day. Some machines, such as the Fasticket machines used on the ECML do accept any card as verification, but some don't. I once got screwed over by Southern at Victoria because my bank routinely replaced my card; I followed their security advice to cut up my old card and start using the new one straight away. Unfortunately on the day of travel the Southern machine would not accept my new card and the station staff forced me to pay (relative) megabucks for a new ticket.
