Derailment on the WCML

Well, I've heard there's a derailment on the West Coast Mainline between Euston and Bletchley.

A freight train but it seems that the route between Euston and Milton Keynes has no services.
No photos yet but this sounds like it could be a fairly sizeable thing to prevent the whole line being used.

Guessing at that, I'm assuming its RM 325s on their way to Willesden PRDC... could be wrong.

What makes you say that? Bizarre assumption.

It's not actually a freight train at all, it's 90046 on a light engine move from Crewe to Wembley (0A90) which was intended to be for tonight's Pretendolino (Friday relief).

National Rail twitter reporting that two of the four lines will be able to reopen this afternoon.

This photo in particular caught my eye.

No doubt it's jumped off those points looking at how the damage is.
Either too fast or the points were faulty, though the latter of which SHOULDN'T happen these days. Come to think of it, neither should the former!

Looks like the 90 jumped off, hit the left-side rail of the far-right (northbound fast) track and that's what's buckled that section out of alignment but also 'guided' the 90 along down the track. though obviously, I'm assuming this from what I can see in the photo which kind of makes sense based on the visible damage and where the locomotive is sitting.

However, I can't tell from the photo what way the points may have been set during the incident. A close up might reveal more but the current one's do not.
The damage in the current photo could suggest either really. Although news sites are saying it's due to high speed, I'll wait for an official verdict before I believe journalists.
Good thing this didn't happen during the day or with an on-coming express.

One thing I've heard is that the 90 was doing around 90mph as it passed through. The maximum allowed for a light engine is 75 mph apparently.

Also that night was a bad night for FL, with a Category 1 SPAD at Stafford, entering the same section another train was.

If there's anything like that, the OTMR will reveal it. Even if the driver was speeding, at least he wasn't seriously hurt...

Last Night a Engineering Train derailed on the WCML at Winsford. This has put a load of Liverpool fans in a bit of bother for getting to the Carling Cup Final today. All Trains between Liverpool and Crewe have been cancelled.
