I think it's more to avoid making assumptions on the intentions of the victim, or the circumstances that led to them getting killed by a train: Certainly under English law a death can only be officially referred to as a Suicide (as opposed to "suspected suicide") once a coroner has held an inquest and declared that suicide was the cause of death. Sadly, there are lots of reasons a person can end up under a train. None of them are undeserving of sympathy for ALL concerned: The victim, relatives, witnesses, train drivers, and the folks who have to literally clean up the mess.Espee wrote:Sounds like the Netherlands have gone over the top with Political Correctness - sorry to hear that. I disagree with the strong wording for those people though.
And appearently the wording "a suicide attempt" is too strong for the Dutch Railways, for the last few years they're referring to it as "a collision with a person".

Between a stroke and a mental health illness?Dave W wrote: What's the difference between that (physical health) and the mental health we're so quick to make judgement on?
In the UK, the symptoms of strokes are well known, advertised and their are highly specialist stroke centres all over the country to deal with you.
For a mental health illness? Good luck finding somewhere outside of 9 to 5.
Think I'm joking?
If the emergency services attend to someone with mental health problems late at night, or at the weekend, and they have no physical problems, chances are they will spend the night in a police cell. Why? Because the local A&E is not a suitable place for them (and quite rightly so), and the only place that is "safe" and open is the police station. Mental health care in this country is still decades behind its physical equivalent.

That is quite possibly more because of the fact that reporting suicides leads to more suicides, rather than a specific political correctness.47434 wrote: I do believe the usual 'Official' term in the UK is the rather vague "incident"...
Maybe any of those that work in the industry know about guidelines on reporting them?

Same here. 'Fatality' has now been ruled out of the phrases-to-use list, but I'm not sure which I preferedBadger wrote:Our internal emails use the term "person hit by a train".

Fatality implies death, person hit by a train is open to interpretation.Dezeero wrote:Same here. 'Fatality' has now been ruled out of the phrases-to-use list, but I'm not sure which I preferedBadger wrote:Our internal emails use the term "person hit by a train".

Re: Death on the Line at New Malden (SWT)
I think anyone who commits suicide with complete disregard for those they are impacting is selfish. And that guy from the article against Jeremy Clarkson is wrong. True, his family knew her, and will remember her, but i have a very good friend who commited suicide, and of course I still remember him very well, but the thought of it doesnt keep me up every night, i don't see him committing suicide over and over again in my dreams, and neither will the family of that woman. All they will remember is fond memories of their time together. As for the driver, all he will ever remember is killing that woman. So i disagree, I think it is incredibly selfish for the person whose life you destroy, and it is that person who becomes the victim.
Just my two cents.

Very true Badger. One time I was on a commuter train. Woman sitting next to me seemed a little "off".Badger wrote:Fatality implies death, person hit by a train is open to interpretation.Dezeero wrote:Same here. She started a conversation with me, and eventually it was revealed that she walked in front of the train to try to be on the right side of the platform so she could get on. The train clipped her, and she went under the train, between the rails, so she was OK in the end, just a little bruised and shaken up.
Obviously she was hit by a train but lived. Fatality wouldn't apply here.
Oh, and she also told me that after the engineer got the clearance to proceed, the conductor denied her passage on the train, citing that it should teach her a lesson about doing dumb things.
