After reading lots of posts on here about people looking at ways of improving their game, making it more competitive I was thinking why dont we come together and think of a couple of scenarios that can be posted on here and the best man wins respect of the community
we just need to come up with different events that people can enter, like for example you have 10 years gameplay to make as much money as possible on a certain map with certain paramaters and the highest wins.
Anyone game for this, il start making up some events?
I get your point, but the you major problem is that the level of how great your network is cannot really be said in numbers such as income or anything similar. If something, then it needs some judges - but then it would be based mostly on opinions, so that is not a good way either.
It certainly is fun to play (good) scenarios though! I would suggest just playing for fun; making a scenario, submitting it here, calling some time when it ends, then evaluate results, eventually let people vote, or just announce "winner" yourself. Nobody needs to officially win after all (imo at least). That way it would still have the part where you look at a certain situation and see how people solved it, but would take away the rather-impossible statistic-based judgements.
Well I was thinking of being more specific with the parameters and not be so vague as to just have company value as the goal.
eg. you gotta make the most money but you can only use 4 stations of any kind with a 12 spread maximum, 10 years to complete and submit your save game.
Or you gotta get as many trains as possible with over 100k profit within a time limit etc..
a nice category might be visual appearance, you could have a panel of judges made up of popular screenshot authors who rate them 1 to 10 and the highest combined score wins.
i think they got one of those on the screenshots page, but im up for it.
I tend to only play one player games if i can come up with a personal challenge, ie last one i made was purely for eye candy, the one before that was to make a network of trains that were only one station long, could do what V said and just submit your challenge idea and then vote on which is best?
- 100 meters, will become the 100 million, the first to make 100 million.
- High jump, a series of increaseing hills the player must travel across and the person the travels across the highest hill fastest wins.
- Football, where to the first to bride and destory a whole town wins.

I not an boring person, I just get excited over boring things.
The best next would to draw up a list of events to nearest the Olympics, here is the list of event happening in the London 2012 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_2012#Sports), to start drawing people into the event.

Open TTD Olympics
100M – Quickest to get to 100M using any method
200M – Quickest to get to 200M using any method
400M – Quickest to get to 400M using any method
Swimming 100M – Quickest to 100 million (only using boats)
Swimming 200M - Quickest to 200 million (only using boats)
Equestrian – highest income with only using horse and carts
High Jump – biggest player made mountain (scenario starts with flat ground and base cost GRF is used to make it harder)
Over all, playing for income is 100% stupid. I recommend introducing some other aspects and goals... Note: None of the game-statistics will probably fit
I think better would be something like having a special quest in each scenario, and the winner would not be who did it most profittably, but just the most awesome way.
Nono, even people who play for effectiveness and high amounts of trains do not play for profit. Reaching high incomes does not say anything at all about your network.
Perhaps 3 categories then, efficiency, looks and maximum profit? You can't discount profit it's still a valid measure of success (and the easiest to judge )

If something, then cargo delivered. Absolutely not profit. But that still does not say too much
well i thought the whole point of there being different events is that we test different aspects of a persons game whether we compete for profit in the 100m or whether we judge for effeciency in another event, you can always go nuts and implement an all round event like the Decathlon where you judge lots of things on someones game, so the arguement of profit versus effeciency of the network doesnt really come into it coz they will all be seperate
I think that the events should be splits in to the following areas;
- Money making, the first to make a certain amount of money first.
I.e. the 100m become first to 100 million, marathon become first to 100 billion and 4*100m relay become 4 player co-ops to 500 million. This could then be made to be more specific to only certain transport like swimming become using only sea transportation.
- Design making, the best designed transport solution.
I.e. Gymnastices, the best design line, and the best design network.
- Finally the odd events.
I.e. Long jump, the player has three years to make as much money as possible off to small island on the largest map and at the ending of three years, try and span between them.
