Seriously, even in these tough times there must be better opportunities out there for people of your education levels.
Yes. Although I actually do wish to have a career in Rail or Bus transport. Not specifically what i'm being forced to apply for. I'd imagine the same goes for Griff?

Just applied for the Sleeper host based in London, I wanted to apply for the Permanent Timetable Manager based in Manchester and my employment adviser said it was out of my reach!

Realistically though, very few managers will take on graduates for such positions, because they will fear that a graduate coming in is after their job.

@Dave Surely you managed to get a job that suited your degree, pretty quickly after graduation?

I know what job Dave has and I doubt it was what he desired, but it is a job at the end of the day.

I "dossed" (read: applied for 40+ jobs per week) for four months before finding work in an internet sales office for a very, very paltry wage.

Apologies for the double post and bumping of the thread.

I applied to Northern again, CSA at Manchester Oxford Road. I completed the online test on the 15th April. Hopefully a month wait is a good sign!

Oh Badger, can you hook me up with a job? :P

They are currently accepting applications for a 'Gateline Operator' at Manchester Oxford Road, if that interests you?

Out of interest, what sort of salary do these positions come in at if you don't mind my asking?

I do not remember the exact figures for the ones I applied for, however, the Gateline role which I referenced above £14,603 increasing to £15,561 after six months employment. The Customer Service Role was better paid, I believe the post six months figure was around £16-£17,000.

Certainly not the £20,000-£25,000 that graduates are supposed to be earning.

Expecting £20-25k straight out of uni is ambitious outside of London. The graduate job market knows there are more graduates than jobs, they've got us over a barrel and salaries have plummeted in many non-specialist areas - and some specialist sectors which have seen heavier than normal cuts.

It would be nice to think I would at least get through to the interview stage, but I don't consider it likely. I've already resigned myself to failure :P
