My effort to make a more realistic map

Post by timofp »

The last days i started making a more realistic map to play on, because the maps created by OTTD are not very realistic in my opinion. My map has a sea, 2 islands, a lake and some rivers, it's also a bit hilly.

At this moment i only have a hiegthmap but i'm also planning to create a scenario for it. The hiegthmap is created for 50% by taking parts of elevation data from all over the world and 50% by coloring it in paint. It was created for a 4096x4096 map but can also be used on smaller maps.

Impressive!

My only critique would be that some of the flat areas are a bit too flat. I guess the largest flat area is about 300*300 pixels of nothing! (see on the attached 3d rendering)

Wow and i have to say, impressive to see a 3D version of my map

I had that feeling also at start but I made them that large with larger cities and mostly farms in mind. (wich I'm going to place in the scenario).

I started making the scenario, i Finished placing major cities and major towns in 1/4 of the map, rest of the map and smaller towns and industries will be done in the next days.

color index for map
----------------------
1) Cities
Blue are large metropolis
light blue are suburbs for these metropolis
green are major cities
red are smaller cities
orange are (larger) towns

2) rail connections (planned)
I will have 4 kinds of rail connections, ICE (fast between major cities), IC (between major cities), IR (between major and smaller cities), L (between towns and cities) and CR (CityRail, for suburbs)
Purple is ICE
Red is IC
Orange is IC+IR
yellow is IC+IR+L
Blue is IR
light blue is IR+L
green is L
pink is CR + others

I will be using FIRS industries and try to place industries realistic, this means large industrial areas near large cities and seaports, farms in open areas and near rivers, sand winning near rivers, fruits on island, oil on one place and minerals (coal, iron,...) in mountains

CommanderZ, I downloaded the GeoGen 7 Alpha and can't seem to get it to work. Once in a blue moon I get some type of error message, but most of the time it's an intro screen and shuts down (no process open/visible in Task Manager). Tried reloading repairing .NET Framework 4 and updating Java, no such luck. Any insights here?

BTW, I'm running Vista Home SP2 (not my choice of OS) if that might be a source of the problem. :| Thanks in advance for any pointers...
