185s are up there, I think. They still make a bit of a noise out of the station, but once you're 200m clear they quieten down nicely. Especially if you're in the car who's engine turns off to save diesel.Ameecher wrote:170s and 158s which are the norm for round there are the quietest DMUs on the network. I can actually listen to my iPod at non-full volume on one of those. On a 156 there's no hope.orudge wrote:I'd like to see some Class 91s on the Edinburgh - Aberdeen line (along with the associated electric wiring to go with them!). Seems rather pointless having diesel HSTs heading all the way from London just because of the relatively short stretch of non-electrified line. In a hypothetical world, the rather noisy Class 170s could be replaced by some sort of nice quiet EMU (I was astonished at how quiet the EMUs were I first went on one on the way to Prestwick Airport).

Quiet on the inside, the 185s.
Really good unit, let's be honest.

Except for the fact that they guzzle fuel like nobody's business! They are stupidly overpowered, imagine if the 4th car they were meant to get had been ordered, it would have had an engine as well. Madness.Dave W wrote:Quiet on the inside, the 185s.

I'm still trying to get a 455 sent down to Weymouth...

rather have AVGs running marylebone - Man picc on a reopened and wired great central returned to its original larger loading guage
Re: What train would you like to see on a certain line?
Considering the route they're designed for, their power is quite useful sometimes. They can turn an engine off when on the flat to save derv, and are then pretty reasonable AFAIK.Ameecher wrote:Except for the fact that they guzzle fuel like nobody's business! Their main problem is that they're not really designed for prolonged mainline running - the short section of WCML is fine, but when you start running them the full stretch to Scotland they drink fuel.

Mass closure of every railway line but one in Great Britain?
Re: What train would you like to see on a certain line?
It'd probably make more sense to just paint "153311" on every other train.
I think we could actually get away with varying length 222s on every route. But I digress.

Sprinters in the channel tunnel, just for laughs. Actually, forget that, 303s in the channel tunnel!

Let's have some top&tail 37/4s on the Huddersfield-Sheffield

I was social distancing before it was cool

Last train journey I could be bothered to look up the headcode for: 04/02/2016, Mirfield to Batley, 2J34 1459 Huddersfield to Leeds, Northern Rail 144015

HSTs running anywhere in the US on Amtrak lines...
Re: What train would you like to see on a certain line?
Is it strange for a South Easter 465 to be towed up the ECML via the Hertford Loop?
Saw that yesterday whilst walking near the railway. Quite unusual.

Old post but since the thread is bumped anyway... I thought that said TopSail 37/4s then: I was slightly concerned that the financial crisis had taken a further dip and we'd only be able to run train services in the direction of the wind.47434 wrote:Let's have some top&tail 37/4s on the Huddersfield-Sheffield

I'm not understanding any of you... you silly British and your trains you call by numbers only, your trains that all look so similar!
I'd like to see GG1's (those Pennsylvania RR machines from back in the States) back... like... everywhere? Even where there's not catenary, just make 'em work. They all still functioned just fine after 50 years, dunno why Amtrak did away with them.

Re: What train would you like to see on a certain line?
Twas about to say our trains all look the same?! hehe What about you and your FP40, GP40 thingies. BLANDDDDD
But yes, the GG1 was nice. I think the biggest mistake US railways made was to scrap electrification plans, and also their abandonment of passenger services to Amtrak. I was frankly shocked when I moved here and discovered that despite their being a railway station in town, and Tulsa (a city of considerable proportions) only 40 miles away, not only could I not take a train from our station.PERIOD! Tulsa was also not served by passenger rail services. I'd have to go all the way to Topeka KS to get a train anywhere! Distances in the US are a bit different (roads are straighter etc, 40 miles is local here, compared to back in blighty) but that is like being unable to catch a train from Birmingham, and having to go to London to catch a train anywhere.
And you all thought UK railways were bad!
