Another curious thought...

Along the lines of JamieLei's thread I was thinking recently about stations where there are more than one different direct route to London (outside of the london fare zone). In the past there were a load down around me with FGW and SWT going to Paddington and Waterloo, now that SWT has cut back their services to Exeter St Davids, this is the only station I can think of. Can you think of any others?

There's a whole bundle in Kent like Gillingham which have services to both Charing Cross and Victoria, as well as some terminating at London Bridge and Blackfriars...very complex around there.

Also, Reading goes to both Paddington and Waterloo.

Glasgow Central (and Motherwell) for now go to both Euston and St. Pancras.

Leeds I think goes to both Kings Cross and St. Pancras (or MML certainly used to run the odd one up there).

Cambridge goes to both Kings Cross and Liverpool Street.

Loads when you think about it - I'm sure I'll think of more in a bit.

I assume you mean KGX, and National Rail reckons that service has disappeared again. I've used it once or twice myself though in the past.

Amersham/Chorleywood/Rickmansworth/Chalfont & Latimer/Harrow-on-the-Hill all have Chiltern services to Marylebone and tube services to Baker Street/Aldgate.

EDIT: Oops, didn't see the London fare zone bit! Aylesbury has Chiltern services to Marylebone, but they can take two different routes - some peak trains via High Wycombe and normal trains via Harrow-on-the-Hill.

The obvious example would be Birmingham to London, which has Chiltern (Chiltern Main Line), Virgin Trains (WCML Fast Lines) and London Midland (WCML Slow Lines), each with different prices and tickets. There's also via Oxford, via Nuneaton, and curiously, via Leicester which are all valid on an Any Permitted ticket (ie: Virgin).

You can buy Advance tickets London - Edinburgh via Virgin too. Curiously, in mileage terms, it's about 2mi longer than going to Glasgow via the WCML, so if Virgin reinstated their Pendo to Edinburgh, they could probably take a nice chunk out of the business market with their excellent First Class offerings.

With the Sleeper going to Euston you have all the stations between Edinburgh - Aberdeen and Edinburgh - Inverness which double up the ECML services. So there's a fair few there.

Ok, I'll start with the ones that I know about:
York - King's Cross.
York - St Pancras via Sheffield and Derby. (summer only).
Chester - Marylebone via Shrewsbury.
Chester - Euston via Crewe.

I've ran out of ideas... Best person to ask would be Sacro.

By extension, that could be extrapolated to any uncommon routing, eg: Stafford - Euston via Birmingham, or Stafford - Birmingham - Oxford - Reading - Clapham Junction - Victoria) if you REALLY wanted (I'd be surprised if it's not permitted).

Ashford International goes to Victoria, Cannon St, Charing Cross, St Pancres via Blackfriars (But this one is only 1 service to london in the morning and 1 back in the evening, I believe) and St Pancres via Stratford International

Yeah...I meant Kings Cross. Kings Cross and St Pancras are essentially the same station though, nowadays at least. Have to go back a bit for direct Glasgow Central to St. Pancras services - think they survived on the S&C until the 1970s.

Birmingham isn't a valid example, because surely its Snow Hill - Marylebone for Chiltern and New Street - Euston for LM and Virgin? Although there's probably some exception I don't know about.

Has anyone mentioned Brighton (and stations to south of East Croydon) yet? There's Brighton - Victoria and Brigton - City Thameslink/London Bridge etc. I learned some of these when I did some work for my PhD supervisor typing in railway timetables.

In recent times (since privatisation) there have been a few, but as was said above, many have gone... Including:
Manchester Piccadilly (Had services to Waterloo and Paddington, now only Euston) ditto Stockport; Crewe.
The Waterloo service was a once-daily via Stockport; Wilmslow; Crewe; Shrewsbury (there's another); The Marches line (so Hereford and Abergavenny also) Newport, BTM, Bath Spa, Shrewsbury and Clapham Junction. Used it once coming back to Huddersfield from Waterloo- was the only person doing the full run.

Southend and Grays have services to Liverpool Street and Fenchurch Street; WGC to Moorgate and Kings X... Peterborough via Ipswich to Liverpool Street and Kings X direct; Bristol TM to Waterloo or Paddington; Portsmouth to Victoria or Waterloo... Banbury to Paddington or Marylebone; Kent to most of them.

There's always my old favourite.

Peterborough, Ely or Norwich, you can catch trains to London Liverpool Street, or Liverpool Lime Street! Plus they leave in the opposite direction ;)

Norwich now only display "Lime Street" now as people kept getting confused.

Surely it's more confusing that to just advertise trains to London or Liverpool?

High Wycombe, gets one train a day to Paddington, rather than the normal Marlybone.
