Convert Rail problem

When ever i try to convert a rail it says that there's no suitable track, can somebody help?

you need to select the new track type first.

How do i do that (I just started playing)

you click and hold the rail icon in the main toolbar, then a dropdown appears with the railtype choices. (not all of them might be available yet)
