Who would like to see new class of tubes?
Couldn't believe it today when this pulled in at Kings Cross St Pancras. Didn't realise they were in daytime public service already - I knew they they'd been testing them during the last few runs of each day. They accelerate ridiculously fast, sound pretty powerful and are distinctively quieter. They also announce which side of the train doors will open which is a nice touch. The doors are definitely wider, and they're extremely spacious, just like the Central Line 1992 stock.
I know it's not really that new, but nice to actually see them in service!

Neat, although the nature of the loading gauge means that there isn't a whole lot of possibility for design variation, so inevitably all tube stocks look similar, especially inside. The wheelchair bay is amusing, as you can't use a wheelchair on much of the tube! But actually the long section of flip up seats is a good idea, as it makes room for some luggage and people standing in the rush hour (much to Audigex's dislike!). The curved grab rails provide a bit of visual charm I suppose!

Haha, I'll take my own bloody chair!
It's always nice to have new hardware though, at least you should be more comfortable stood up than you would've been on the old ones.

They've got an ambition to make the entire Victoria Line wheelchair accessible - they're slowly working through every station. So I suppose if they're gonna put proper wheelchair spaces on any train, it would be the Victoria line

Re: Who would like to see new class of tubes?
I was on a tube train with flip down seats last week, but it was the Northern line so I'm guessing they won't be getting new stock, what with the current stuff only being 15 years old and all?

Re: Who would like to see new class of tubes?
No, this stock is for the Victoria line. The 1995 stock on the Northern Line only has 8 flip up seats per carriage and they aren't in a big bit like that.
Be interesting to see how they eliminate the gap for wheelchairs. The Jubilee line extension is designed for them of course - saw a guy in a mobility scooter driving off the tube at London Bridge yesterday, its amazing how level the train and platform were.

Actually at both Kings Cross and Highbury and Islington, there is actually no gap whatsoever between the train and the platform. Or perhaps it was just for the carriage I got off. It's getting better, although some stations *cough* Bank! *cough* are pretty diabolical for the distance.
Edit: Plus I don't actually think the Northern Line "1995" stock were introduced until 2000!

mmm, yes, that does look nice.
Oh we're looking at the train?
Yes, very good. I'm hoping to get one of the new ones next time I go down to London.

Re: Who would like to see new class of tubes?
I have no idea how many of them are in public service though. The chances of finding one are pretty slim I'd imagine!

Don't they get fully rolled out end of Summer 2010?
Re: Who would like to see new class of tubes?
There are only 2 sets (ie, 1 train) in passenger service at the minute. The rest are doing nighttime tests.

Re: Who would like to see new class of tubes?
No one got any news on the S-stock? It must be out and about by now.
Re: Who would like to see new class of tubes?
I read something the otherday about new tube trains running now that are fitted with Air-Con. Guess that must be those.
Re: Who would like to see new class of tubes?
Hmm, haven't been on the Victoria line for ages so no idea.
Re: Who would like to see new class of tubes?
Well I was actually referring to the new S-Stock for the Metropolitan and whatever other lines they're going to run on.
Re: Who would like to see new class of tubes?
As of today, Sone S-stock trains have been built and delivered, behind Class 20's (amazingly, woldnt have thought they had the power...) I think they are only used for testing at the moment, dunno when they would be in service
Very much a retired regular poster..... If you can say that
