Question from an absolute beginner

Ok, I borrowed the PS1 one version of Transport Tycoon from a friend years ago and really enjoyed it. Although, I didn't really know what I was doing. A few days ago I started thinking about it again and managed to get my hands on TTD. Its still great and I'm starting to love it all over again. :)

However, I'm finding aspects of the game a little overwhelming and some of the rail networks I've seen other people make are quite frankly mind-blowing. Well, after all that expsition, my question is: From a beginner's point of view, would it be best to switch to OpenTTD? Afterall, it's a much more expanded and user- friendly version of the same game right?

I would definetly recommend OpenTTD. The community is wider when it comes to development and I believe almost everything from TTDPatch can be done in OpenTTD.

I'd suggest you look into TTDP too, it does offer some nice features that OTTD doesn't offer. In my experience it is A LOT easier to start with OTTD though.

TTD has way too many limitations, OTTD has most of these limitation lifted, which when i first started out playing TTD, the number of vehicles in game used to drive me crazy. Since playing OTTD, i have yet to max out the vehicles.

Also there are heaps of extra features in OTTD, that make the game more fun. It takes a little to get used to some of them. But after are couple of games you can be right in there.

Thanks for the input everyone. I have another question and thought I might aswell post it here. What is the difference between "unload" and "transfer"? I seem to get money for transfering but the notification is in yellow rather than green.

You doesn't get money from transfer. Cargo is unloaded and waits for further transport.

I see, so what does "Transfer: £9,096" mean? How much the load is worth from that distance?

Exactly. If you use two trains t1 and t2 they will make a total revenue R.

R = r1 + r2

When t1 arrives at the station you will be notified the value of r1.


Worth to mention is that when t1 arrives to the station, R is not known so the split of R between r1 and r2 is just a qualified guess. In fact my explanation is a simplification as it doesn't know how many legs that will happen after the current leg before the cargo arrives.

Transfers are used for feeder services/systems. You can read about them at the wiki.

my understanding of transfer for feader systems is that, you then don't get the pop up saying that train such and such has made a profit loss last year.
As the money made from train A and train B is shared between the two.

But someone can correct me if I am wrong, I don't mind :)

Ok, thanks for all the help. I have another question or two. :)

At the moment, I am supplying a coal mine with coal from two other mines. Soon, I will make a third one supply it too.

i.e. Mine A and Mine B transfers to Mine C, Mine C transfers to Mine D, Mine D transports to Power station.

As you can tell, Mine D gets A LOT of coal and I think its time to expand Mine D's station with more platforms and have more than one train transport to the Power Station. Before, I have done this by building a one-platform station adjacent to the existing one. However, it doesn't look very nice or uniform when half of the station has a shelter and the other half doesn't.

Could I simply remove the station and replace it with one that has more platforms? Will it mess with train orders? I tried to do this but apparently the authorities wouldn't let me build the station. Any help would be grately appreciated.

As long as there is no train in the station when you do this, it should work.

Select to build the station to build, Change to drag and drop. Then go over the whole station that you want re-building. Authorities, I don't think, have a problem with this. (but if they do atleast you havent bulldozed the station first, and then cant get it back.)

With standard graph's though, remember that the roof is only for multiples of two tracks.

Thanks. Another question, sorry about this.

I'm currently dabbling in a feeder system that uses buses to transfer passengers to an airport. I don't know if I am doing it correctly. Does the bus station have to be directly adjacent to the airport to transfer passengers to it or just in the catchment area of the bus station?

The bus station you are taking passengers to has to be the same station as the airport. When placing the station, press Ctrl ;).

Thanks. Ok, its 1979 in my game now and I want to convert to electrified track so I can use electric trains. I know about the convert track button but is there a way to convert all track at once?

Open a viewport at one corner of the map, scroll to the opposite order and draw from the viewport into the main viewport. You can create a box as large as the complete map that way.

Depending on your pointing device hardware zooming out may not even be needed. Just start dragging in one corner and pan towards the opposite corner. Some input devices behaviour like a joystick when you pan around in OpenTTD. Then you can just move far away from center and scroll over the entire map in just a few moments. Not sure why this feature isn't available for normal mice also.
