Using standard Train Engines in Desert / Arctic / Toyland

Hi

Is there an easy way to use the standard train engines (from temperate regions) in desert, arctic or toyland regions?

Or else, can someone recommend a set rather similar to the originals but without the big gap in train developement between the two-headed diesel and monorail?

Have you tried the 2cc set perhaps?

That both looks promising (the 2cc set will have a greater impact on the gameplay i guess from the description).
I will see which i like more.
